Birch sides, mahogany trim, maple/purpleheart/maple "pinstriping."
Wood choice was dictated by what was available, not too expensive, and looked good together. And one other thing -- no stain. Why? Wood comes in wonderful colors. Less mess, no finish compatibility worries. It all boils down to what you like, though. I just don't like messing with stain if I don't have to.
If I do mess with it I use dye, not stain. Dyes contain no oil, which often leads to adhesion issues if it doesn't dry thoroughly. Dye can be washed with water or alcohol to lighten it. It dries fast, so you can get on with the topcoat without waiting weeks. But no dye, no stain, no hassle.
In anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away.
