Galley slide outs

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby paddlehead » Sun Dec 06, 2009 10:43 pm

Here are two pictures of our galley slide outs. The left side holds the camp stove and has pots and pans in the cabinet below. The right side originally was for the Igloo TE cooler, but we now carry an ice chest in the car and use the big slide out bin for storage of food, a portable BBQ, etc. Both slide outs also have flip up counters that really come in handy.

The slides are side mounted, 100# rated from Home Depot. You can see them located along the bottom. They slide out a full 24".

He could probably explain it better than I; but in essence he has a platform with outboard folding legs that attaches to the side of the trailer at the bottom of the galley access door. The galley counter itself has wheels under it and just rolls right on out. The platform rides behind the tongue box when traveling. Quite ingenious in my opinion for a trailer that was three quarters finished before he ever heard of teardrops.

I plan to use a system like this for my jPod. The only difference is that it will come out of my galley on a teardrop.

Tinksdad,

Ditto on the "genius". If I recall they named it the Hillbilly Hilton. 8) I saw their rig at the Oak Mtn camp too. I was going to use a hinged galley, but not now. I liked how he made that void accessible with a door inside. That extra room would be nice to have while camping. Plus no worries with keeping water out, except for a side door to cover the galley when retracted.

Small but works for the two of us in a standy. All the pans, dishes, utensils and flatware store in the drawer along with foil and Saran wrap. 2 burner range and sink with hot and cold running water on the top. 600 lb capacity 36" full extension drawer guides from McMaster Carr are rock solid (and expensive). Icebox and food storage inside the trailer.

Carter,

That's some nice work. You build that whole trailer?

Yeah, my craftmanship is nowhere NEAR Carter's, but maybe I'll get by. I too got to see Neil & Ramona's rig at Oak Mountain, and yes, I'm busy plotting my own version. Glad he hasn't copyrighted the design yet.

Neil, I wonder...does your mattress get in the way of the door access inside? Looks to me like the door goes all the way to the floor. And your mattress is a king-size...

Has anyone ever made their galley removable? I wanted something that would

A) Allow me to remove the entire galley (at least from the countertop down) and use it other places beside the trailer..for example on a picnic bench, inside a storm shelter etc,

and

B) Open the rear bottom of the camper to allow me to slide a full-on mattress in and out without having to stuff it through the side door.

Has anyone done this? How did you secure the galley inside the trailer? I was thinking maybe make my upper cabinets removable as well so they could be taken out. All pieces would have handles built in and have enough water/fuel internally to be self-contained or at least use quick-disconnect fittings. Perhaps even scavenge a set of wheeled luggage to make it human-towable.

Of course, this concept could be combined with many of the slide-out drawers and counters as seen at the top of this page.

Thoughts?

(edit) PS: I just noticed the picture above my post. It seems that something like that could even work as long as it was kept light enough to be removed by 2 people.

Jim,
I really like this set-up. Without hijacking the thread, can you say what type of seals you used to seal the slide-out in both the "in" and the "out" postion?
Thanks, Tom
