At first I was going to put a red light behind the door as an accent light at night but got to thinking that it's my sisters teardrop so I'm going to add some decorative molding around the door instead. ;)

 I wonder if you can get a rope light that small. Maybe one of the places that cater to auto detailing. Could serve as a good night light.

they do not as far as I know make rope light smaller than 1/2" dia. but they do make LED Ribbon and LED Tape (self adhesive ribbon) as small as 10 x 1.7 mm (1.7mm is less than 1/8") in various colours. it's 12V DC and it also comes in waterproof designs for outdoor use.

just as with rope light, it's the cost of the power supply that is the big factor in the cost. you can run a lot more tape on that power supply than just 4 feet.

if you look, you'll find it's a little more complicated than that. most rope light is low voltage and needs a power supply to convert your 120v AC input to 12v DC output between the rope/light and the plug/power source. some is 120v AC and needs a rectifier to drop the amperage down to 1 or 2 amps. in the case of Light Tape, to change 120v AC or 12v DC input to 9v DC output. even with 12v DC input, I'm pretty sure you need something to limit the amperage going to the rope light. (not sure, haven't installed from a 12v DC input yet)

All the rope lights that I have seen plug right in to the outlet......

LED's or rope won't give me the effect that I was looking for. But then the tape, that just might be the ticket. Cost ! Well that just means that I might have to save a little longer to get what I want. A quality teardrop is going to cost money and I'm not just talking about your labor. ;)

Gage, I put inexpensive single LED lights in my cabinets, on a switch. Not for effect, but because I wanted to be able to see inside the cabinetry in an otherwise dark trailer. I have found this to be a very useful item.
