I added a door latch and a RV window. Makes for an easy installation.
After the door latch striker is set in place, I'll remove the thumb latches and fill the holes with a decorative button.

Me too, thanks for the quick shipping!

Where did you get the door handles?

Here's our "cargo door" door (i did not build it).
The bottom is flush with the floor.
The opening makes a great place to sit,
and the fender is a coffee table.

I finally made a decision for my doors...bought a set of pre-made aluminum/FibreGlass doors from a fellow T&TTT Member....a quick ship from down-south and here are the results:

Doors are not extremely difficult to build. If you like the looks of the factory version and if it is budgetable, then it is a really fast fool proof way to go.

My budget was tight, and I wanted a different look. So I made my own. Took a day or two of part time work.

I thought I would just buy 2 doors when the time came but for some reason, I am having a hard time justifying the $500-ish it will cost to buy 2 locking doors with screen/windows.

I am building this entire TD from scratch yet for some reason the idea of building the doors seems daunting (mostly whether I can get them to look ok and be watertight).

So I am open to thoughts/discussion/advice etc.

I'd love to hear from folks who have built their own doors successfully and also those who know where I might buy some doors cheaper than 2 for $500.

...as always, Rock on!
$500.00 for a pair of doors with windows frames and hardware and you think that's pricey?? you'd be lucky to get the materials for that never mind including the value of your time..

Yes I do think $500 a pair is pricey....especially since I got 2 doors shipped to me for under $80 and can get the windows/door latches for under $100....that is 2 doors for under $200. That is much better than $500.

As far as my time goes...this Tear is already taking longer than I'd like, but the point was to build the thing myself...using your philosophy I should have just bought an entire Tear. If I wanted to just buy one, I would have just bought one (same point applies to the doors). I am enjoying the building process and knew that my time would be taken up, but I enjoy projects and if I wasn't building this tear right now I'd be working on a million other projects around my 60 year old house.

The $300 I saved by getting these white doors can buy me a little TV and DVD player for the Tear....or a heck of a lot of beer.

good to hear you found something for a good price but that still doesn't make $500.00 a lot of money for two functional doors (frames, trim rings, seals, hinges, lockset, handset, windows) compared to what the parts alone would cost..even if you went for the cheapest components it's still not a lot.

just to give you an example, the privacy lock handsets (stainless steel) for the doors I'm making right now are $250.00 a door.

$250 per door handle is more then most would spend. It all depends on each person's budget and how they are planning on using their TD. The 2 door handles at $500 would be 1/3 of my original budget, 1/4 of my updated budget :)
Home-made doors can be made for much cheaper then the $500 pre-made doors, but they do look sweeeeeet
