I think it's to give you 1/4" for the seal. Not sure though... anyone else know?

Ira,
If you drive any gravel roads that paint will get blasted off those fenders quick. I can see why Carry uses stainless steel fenders. I have the plain ol "Ship Shape" fenders from Northern. I had my brother paint mine with three coats of primer (one acid etch and two regular) then three coats of automotive paint ( 1997 Chrysler deep amethyst pearl, paint code CU) and about four coats of clear and still the leading edge of my fenders have huge chips. When I repaint I will add that clear plastic sticker to cover the fenders. It is the stuff people put on the rocker panels of their trucks.

I don't know what plastic stuff you're talking about. (Got a link?) And believe me, I believe YOU about the thing getting chipped to hell, even if I'm not on gravel roads all that much. (Down here, it's coral.)

That's why I'm also considering doing a crazy netting thing, or something similar:

I have the Northern Tool fenders too, and I KNOW it's not easy painting them to last, let alone making them look halfway decent.

What kind of money do you think we're talking about if I brought them to a body shop for pro painting? A fortune?

http://tinyurl.com/bvhfw try this link. I would ask a body shop about the fenders, it would not hurt. I am lucky my brother does paint for cars, so I got the free bee special :applause: .

Thanks for all the wonderful advice. You folks are the greatest. I just placed an order with McMaster-Carr for a pair of stainless steel hinges.

My fenders looked great prior to my trip to Minden....I did them in black, a very unforgiving color....I figure when they get too bad, I'll just spot putty and reshoot them...I also looked into having a bra made for the fronts of the fenders, but then what's the point if it is going to be completely covered...I think your best bet to prevent that is flaps on the tow vehicle....Oh well, that will give me something to do in the winter months...like I don't have enough now....For me...Grants off set hinges were the trick on the door thing.....Doug

They call it "clear bra" Its made by 3M. Shouldn't cost much if you can get it in a small size just for the fenders.

Yeah, but unlike MY photos, you never see any beer cans in Tom's.

Tom

This is how I held my doors in alignment during hinge installation

The 1/4" spacer strip on the hinge side could be clearer in the photo!

Has anyone thought about routing out a groove for the pivot portion of the hinge? This would allow it sit more flush with the side of the tear....

Tom, Have you got your hinge yet? If so, how's it working. I need to order door hinges and would like to know what you think of the one you got. Thanks. Jim
