Dumb question regarding Queen size mattress & trailer width

Forget the queen and go for a full size instead. In a teardrop you can use ALL of the surface without fear of falling out of bed. I put a queen in Chubby because it duplicated what we had in the master bedroom. However, it seems so damn hugh in the teardrop because we are able to utilize all of it. I put a full in the next build and it is still plenty large. ( and we are not little people)

This company will make custom mattresses. http://www.campbellmattressco.com/ They are in Poplar Bluff, MO. Check for retail locations, too. Most companies will ship mattresses, I' wouldn't doubt they will, too.

Am I supposed to say I have no financial interest here? I don't, but the folks down there sure could use the jobs! If you go pick it up, you're not far from some beautiful areas to camp with gorgeous streams & lakes. Some of the prettiest country around!

By the way, not a dumb question! I want every square inch I can get in a queen size bed, so I'm glad you asked. My husband can hog a king sized bed, so space is a biggie for me, too.

We are going to custom make ours from 5" high density foam. Cut into 3rds so we can stack them at the foot and load gear into the TD. The covers are going to be made from a suade material by my Mother in law. Great Lady. :)

yup, 6" foam and memory foam from walmart on line. Didn't have electric knife, cut just fine with serrated knife. cut 2" from the sides and bottom. don't miss it as also posted, cause you can use the whole mattress. Besides, the mattress is really comfortable.

I just ordered and received a queen size 8" futon mattress from walmart. My tear is 5' but I have 3/4 walls. So 1.5" less than 5'. The queen is 60" and I stuffed it in a 58.5" interior. It fits great. Its very comfortable but I have not camped in it yet.

my bed is one inch less than a queen wide, I ended up making my mattress 97083 from packaging 97084 being thrown away at work, and don't ever plan on a tucked in sheet. (not that fun to reach all the way down to the foot of the bed underneath the shelf, and I am someone who crawls into small areas for a living) I planned on using a queen sized sleeping bag liner for the sheet, but then discovered there is a really big jump in price from a double sleeping bag liner to a queen liner. I ended up getting this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005EP ... 01_s00_i00, and even though it wasn't as wide as the bed we normally sleep in, it worked fine. 97123
I just put my outer arm outside the sheet and it was fine as it was still under the blanket. our camping blankets are single fleece sleeping bags (only the best, Ozark Trail) that you take two and zip together for two people to share. In the future I may go with two of these http://www.amazon.com/Cocoon-Silk-Cotto ... liner+silk as they do the same thing.
While I may never have bedding that is queen sized, I still think the extra space is worth any extra money or build time.
I won't be using regular bedding in my tear as the bed is where all the awnings, chairs, etc. ride during travel. I just grab the top end of the memory foam topper and roll it up underneath the shelf, leaving the foam block mattress to store things on.

Joann occasionaly has thier foam on sale and I bought 4" at half off and then had teh 50% off coupon so it didnt come out too bad. cut it to size minus 3 inches to make it easier to make the bed. took a mattress topper from walmart queen size and you cant tell its just foam. very comfy too. the loft got a 3" inch foam as well and ita a little short but hey its longer than the kids. the biggest benefit is that it makes it so easy to pull out of the trailer if i am doing any work in there.

If your teardrop is slightly undersize for the listed mattress size you can still probably fit one if you can shop for them in person. I have found queen mattresses run from 60" down to 57" wide. If you can measure them you can get one to fit if you are just a tad small.

The inside dimensions on my tear are 58 1/2 wide and 75 long. I ordered and queen 6 inch foam mattress from foam by mail, cut 5 inches of the end and stuffed it in there.Fits perfect and you can't pull the sheets loose no matter how bad a dream you have. I just spent a week camping in mine and loved it.

Another option if you get creative is to use an old sleep number bed. I'm running the hoses in from the galley where the pump will be in the bottom cabinet. Since the bed is actually a "Build a bed" with air bladders and foam boarder walls it's easy to make it fit into tight places where it shouldn't fit based on dimensions alone. Now if you have the bank roll, a new RV queen size from sleep number is smaller than a traditional queen. Main reason I'm using one is I'm a delivery and install tech for them and I've gotten my hands on a good, clean used one for free :)

just courios.

A few reasons that I can think of are:

-If it gets wet or damp inside, it might dry out better in the sun.
-It's easier to clean if the mattress is out.
-It's easier to make repairs to the trailer if you need access to the floor or inside walls
-You can flip/rotate the mattress to allow it to wear more evenly
-You can use the trailer to move cargo
-Winter storage
-You luck out and get a better mattress to replace the existing one

All pretty good reasons to go SleepNumber. I'm not trying to push them because I work there (trust me I get zero commission for anything) but since they are components in a zippered shell they are easy to remove if needed and are way more comfortable than a foam matt. Check craigslist for a good deal on a used one.

Used mattresses of ANY KIND scare me. I'm paranoid of little bed critters that might be hitchhiking on them. The same reason I wanted to build a teardrop in the first place, to get away from staying in hotels.

as my interior is unfinished bare wood, if I ever feel I need to put more finish inside my plywood tent, I like the idea I can roll up the topper and the rest comes out in a stack of blocks. (got some crazy ideas kicking around in my ADD brain could be interesting if I go for them, mostly to make the trailer longer at both ends)

I have a few questions about this too. We are kind of dead set on putting an adjustable bed in the teardrop we build, and I want this one, since it is manually raised and lowered: http://www.pragmabed.com/products-page#pragma_simple_adjust_bed_frame AMAZING, right???

Jason is 6'2", so he would really prefer sticking with a queen size, and we'll likely be traveling with the pups who are huge bedhogs, despite their 4lb & 13lb sizes. The frame is 60" wide for the queen. I called the company and you can take the legs off the base and still have it be fully functional.

Here are my questions:
1) How much of a pain is it to get that extra few interior inches from a standard 5' wide design? In your opinion, is it more of a pain than cramping your sleeping space? Any other considerations for choosing the full or queen bed size?
2) Am I crazy thinking that we can stay under 1000 lbs gross & 180 lbs tongue weight with a 5' x 9' Grumman 2 slightly widened for a 60" interior width? Since the hubby is a material scientist, he has all kinds of knowledge and resources on lightweight materials, but I am curious to get some other opinions.
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing to keep it interesting!
