I slept on one at a friends house as a guest setup and by morning my arse was bottomed out on the floor. No bueno.

For me - no thanks! Either too hard or too soft, often both in one night as it leaks, sometimes so slowly you can't find the leak to fix it. Most that I came across are just to noisy, it's like sleeping on a drum skin! And I found them cold? Very little insulation from the cold ground. No thanks, I am doing the foam mattress thing.

Thanks for the thoughts. I've found some 4" mattress toppers that will be ideal.

A) to keep from sleeping on the ground, and
B) to minimize the "hassles" and setup time for camping, particularly for a short weekend duration.

For both of these reasons, I used a foam mattress in my teardrop instead of an air mattress.

Well said.

I find chicks sleep fine in a cardboard box and don't need a mattress. The problem is they can "peep" all night and are better off out in the chicken coop!

http://www.foamforyou.com/CustomCutFoam.htm

The above link has a nifty calculator that calculates the cost of your exact size mattress you need, for 5 different foam types.

Overstock.com has some great deals on mattress toppers. I'm going with a 3'' memory foam topper.
