Andy,

So you're suggesting rather than doing deep carving, that I just do some good photo cnc stuff...

Like this maybe?

I think I've seen the wolf before. That's a lithophane, right?

Never heard of a lithophane...

I don't know if the guy that did the wolf made it thin enough to use a backlight... but I certainly wouldn't recommend a lithophane for a teardrop side...

When I've played around with it, mine are deeper than those... not including the f**kups - theres a few marks in my sacrificial layer at the moment from some daisies for the wife...

its interesting, how much play one can do with converting to greyscale, i must have had 20hrs in on the wifes daisies and 15+ layers before i exported it and tried to cut... now im thinking of starting over from scratch ;)

I new I had seen it before. It's in the vetric photo carve web site. I keep wanting to try it, but havnt spent the time yet. It's carved out of a 1/4" semi-translucent corian. The final thickness is based on the shade, so darker areas are thicker, lighter areas are thinner. If you look at it without backlight it is pretty boring, but when you have back light (in this case the window) you can see the greyscale image. Now it's got me thinking about a lithophane window...
