You'll have plenty of strength with 2" lap joints.

Go lie down in your bed like you were going to sleep, now pivot and sit up on the edge, that is where you want the door. Measure from the head of the mattress to your hip, subtract a bit to fit your arm and shoulder.
For windows I just say, the biggest you can fit in the door the better. I've never seen anyone complain their windows were too big, or let in too much air. Inside of a tear is for sleeping and other activities that don't require much of a view, if the wife is afraid she will feel boxed in, add some mirrors up ahead of the door frame. I have small porthole windows ahead of the door, mostly for looks, but nice to see out of when the side tent blocks the door window.
