Anyone want to come and do our Galley? Free Board and Room!!

I just checked on Travelocity. Round trip Air fares from Boston to Helsinki start at $1,200 US. Now, if I could find an air far that I can afford ...

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I just flew in from Boston and boy, are my arms tired. :chicken:

Tom,

If I where to do it over I'd put the upper drawers over the sink and make the other upper cabinets sliders like yours. I'm constantly moving things around on the counter to get into cabinets. I put in some shelves in the upper cabinets as well. Otherwise most of the space is wasted.

These pictures were taken before my teardrop was actually finished, but they show the galley lay out. I wanted everthing related to the galley, in the galley and this is what I came up with.

Slide out ice box.

Slide out, unfolding stove shelf.

The only thing I would do differently if I were doing it over is, I'd add sliding cabinet doors to eliminate interefence with items on the conter top.

Just to throw an unwanted, but KISS, idea into this topic - instead of struggling with hingeing, lift-up or sliding doors on cabinets above the worktop, how about having just one 'door' that lifts out when you're using the galley? A simple piece of 1/4" ply would do nicely.

If it's too shameful to just lean the loose door against the side of the teardrop, it could have a second home clipped under the open hatch, but that's gettin' awful fancy.....

The only thing I would change in our galley, is to make the cabinets behind the counter all sliders like Tom S. When the counter is in use, you have to move stuff to get to the cabinets. Otherwise the layout is just about right for us.

Andrew,

Good idea, and subscribing to the same principle, the door is only there to hold stuff from falling out while driving, so how about no door at all...just a net afair that could be taken down and out of the way. With a set up like that, you could see what was in the cabinets without having to open whatever type of door that's in the way.

Which reminds me of a friend's kitchen where we subscribed to this idea and fitted a long roller blind to the front of all the upper cabinets - the idea being that when you went into the kitchen, you'd raise the blind and have instant access to the whole of the cabinet.

Sounded great, but didn't work - we lazy bums just reached behind the blind. So the back of the blind acquired all sorts of jam stains, etc...... Eeeew.

So you need to think long and hard about all 'great ideas' for galleys!

Hey,

I don't remember seeing any glass or Lexan dividers between the cabin and galley...

Your cooler looks good, don't forget the stove :)

Do you have a place to store your food? How about your silverware? Your dishes? Are you planning on a stove? Sink?

Critter-

To have horizontal opening doors you could use door slides like these:
