The Plan ... so far

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby GPW » Wed Mar 01, 2006 8:10 am

At least I'd like to have the opportunity to have my skills STINK too ....hahahahahahaha

Ira , Thanks !!!!! Im thinking this thing will be a TANK !!!! The sides are gonna' be uninsulated , and just stained or painted...

I'll make insul/panels later if necessary...more weight ....

All parts will be simple , basic cabinets, shelves... not too much permanent weight like cab doors , drawers, etc , just a table/counter in the back (ESCAPE MODE)

Structure will be heavy (ouch !!!) but no frills to weigh things down ... the really heavy stuff will be carried in the bed of the pickup ...or the ole ladys' TrailBlazer

Sorry , I'm workin' on the paragraph thingie' , but I have to overcome spellering first ..... :D

edit: I helped with your paragraph! Mike...

GPW,

I had to splice 3/4" plywood for my floor as it is 5' x 9'. I have two pieces of 4' x 5', then the last 1' is made of two pieces of excess from the cuts, but won't have any weight on that part. I used a router and a 1/4" slot cutter to cut a groove for a spline. I started the slot 1" from one end of each piece, and stopped it an inch short of the other end. I cut a spline 1/4" thick and the width of the slot and glued it in. Then, I backed the joints with 1x4 and screws. My wife and I both stood on the floor at the joint, and I jumped up and down on it...and there is no flexing at all.
Dale

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.

Big Daddy's coming over tomorrow to help me plan my trailer mods .... he's a retired welder and the front man in our band....Need to add a couple cross members and add a support out of each side in the front of the box as a bolt point for the floor/frame, may cut down the tongue a little , that or build a tool box support and a bike rack ...more weight and on the hitch too, this trailer is HEAVY!!!
Got the top of one side glued on , and battened with a 1x4, used LN HDCA as suggested to butt join the plywood top/side piece to the side and Tightbond II to glue the battens down , followed by many countersunk screws...laid out at 6" intervals ... door framing was done the same as well .....tomorrow, the other side .... this is FUN !!!
If I only go with one door , I feel the need to have an egressable window on the other side , just in case??? You guys have any ideas ... I see a vast array on the pics , but I just dunno'....

G, don't remember what windows you wanted but check here:
http://www.redneck-trailer.com/2004/H/P ... 0-H-11.pdf
for saftey glass windows, if they have what you want, you'll haveta find a dealer, think welding/steel/trailer supply...you can also order online at TJTrailers.com...we are using their 24x15's

M/Jack ... Many thanks !!! Looks like some nice windows.... I sure wish those "feed doors "opened sideways or even up ... That would be a quick fix... eh ?
My problem is I can use almost any window in the door (so long as it looks cool ...hahahahaha) but I need an egressable window for the other side ... not too many of those in the TD shops ...RV dealers tell me ," Yeah !!! We can custom make anything you want , it'll be a little pricey .... " no use talking to them .... 3 more months to hurricane season .... TIME!!!

G, you could always turn those feed doors upside down, the problem is they don't have an inside latch...you might wanna check with these folks https://www.rvsurplussalvage.com/index.php they have a ton of stuff, I would suggest calling them since they have lotssa stuff that never makes it onto their website...also, why a door and an egress window and not just 2 doors...simpler, faster, cheaper

M/Jack .... Have you ever slept on the floor with 26 other people and 16 pets ....in a medium size house .... That's what happened during Katrina. TG that only lasted a couple days or friends and family would have been killing each other ... We had to have a plan!!!!! .... First plan was to buy land , build an escape house .... the more we thought about it ,the dumber it was, not to mention expensive ... a TD provided Privacy for the Boss Lady and at no great expense, multiple bills /taxes... she wanted one door and only one window .... I told her Heck NO !!! That would be like those ugly FEMA trailers ... they are like prisons...
Your Logic is faultless... two doors ....Yep , you're right !!!That would be easier...

I still like those Feed Doors .... I'll check it out , THANKS!!!

Wife suggested a trip to the boneyard might provide a lot of useable goodies (windows ) ... and I'm gonna' get in touch with my yacht -repair pal ... about finding some portholes (so many damaged boats here) Who knows ... and I love to "scrounge" parts cause' I'm THRIFTY(read: CHEAP)

Hey, good luck with those portholes!

I tried and tried and tried--but everything I found was way more than I could spend. (I must have done 500 searches for portholes on eBay.)

I wound up with the cheap alternative you see in my avatar. Each door takes two of them...inside and out, mounted flush to the walls. About $35 a porthole, for a total of about $140 for both doors.

They're not a great solution as to total window area or convenience (because of the way they open), but they should be plenty watertight and look cool.

Ira , yours looks WAY COOL !!!!! And after all it's the "look" we're going for ...
This place is a veritable boat graveyard after the storm .... thousands and thousands ruined... gotta' be a porthole for me somewhere????
I just took a ride into town , passed all kinds of FEMA trailers , some have COOL windows...still looking!!!!!!

Make sure that before you buy any real portholes, if you decide to do that, that you're 100% sure of your eventual TOTAL wall/door thickness.

The ply, framing, plus inside and outside skins.

They call it the porthole's spigot size, which is the depth, or the range of depths, that the porthole can accommodate.

Thanks for the tip .... never knew that !!!! spigot , thought that had something to do with BEER :D
Got my floor frame cut out today ... 2"x4" Spruce ... All I have to do now is find someone with a radial arm saw and a dado to half-lap the joints ...would do it with a handsaw and a chisel (old school ) but I have less than 100 days now...that would take forever...
I had no luck posting pics here, must be the Mac.... usually there's something like" manage attachments " That I can upload directly to .... I dunno ' how to work this .... or I'd be flooding you guys with pics ...
