Why not hot glue a thin strip of 1/8" masonite on the edge of the luan before trimming? It would prevent splintering and could be easily removed when finished.

Something like the 34406 from BC Saw and Tool. They refer to it as a helix cut because the bit is so short, 5/8-1".

Have you tried laying a strip of masking tape down the area that you are going to rout?...helps hold the grain down and won't tend to tear out...rout the tape and the wood at the same time.worth a try anyway...I do it all the time...make sure your bit is sharp and clean off any resin that may have built up on it...I also chuck up the bit so that it cuts the material and only hangs down about 1/4" or less on the side board...less chance of chafing the side material...but, this is just what I do.....Doug
