Mike's
Here's one way to do it...

Continue your furring strips around the back.

Then notch out for the hatch... 1/4 or 3/8, depending on the size weatherstrip you plan on using.

Not shown, but you'll need a frame member for the galley counter too
.

1. What happens if I cut away for the gasket and then add the framing?

2. Would I need to add to the upper framing to meet this strip? Join with a biscuit.

3. Is the kerfing strong enough for that purpose? The 60 degree shouldn't be too many. Maybe every 2-3 inches. May be be able to do several every 6 inches or so. I can PL glue them when set???? (I'll play with that tommorow.)

4. Do I need to screw into this framing at a curve?

5. I would have to ease where the 60* joins the 24*. Make it softer.
What'd ya think?

Course this still leaves me makeing the Hatch
You all are wonderful

Miriam,

I've got a few pictures of my hatch construction here:
http://home.comcast.net/%7Ebdosborn/tear/teardrop4.html

I used the Kuffle Creek plans which call for a 1/4" gap between the hatch and the trailer on the top and the bottom (total off 1/2"). I thought I'd leave the bottom of the hatch flush with the trailer and ended up triming a 1/4" off after it was built.
Let me know if you want a closer look at anything and I'll go out and take some more pics...

Hey, Jim and Bruce. Those are great. Did you both notch the sides?

Bruce notched his sides. You can see it in this pic. (Hope you don't mind my pasting your pic Bruce)

Let me think about your other questions. I'll answer them when I get back home later...

nope, didn't notch no stinkin sides..
i should, but I can't cut that good, and a sander would take a week to take off that much wood.

You would have to come back and notch the framing. 3/8" is not enough to get a consistant seal from side to side.

Miriam C. wrote:2. Would I need to add to the upper framing to meet this strip? Join with a biscuit.

The only reason you would want upper framing is so that you have a place to hang your hatch off of. You don't need biscuits. You need lots of screws!

Kerfing works. Even butt joints work, provided they are tight butt joints.

No you won't be screwing into this framing, unless you are attaching the framing to the sidewalls with screws.

Sure, what ever profile you like. You could even make the 24" radius a 30" radius.

Yes, you are making a hatch, so plan on it. It's not really hard, and it's not as dreaded as some people make it out to be.

The only other alternative is to recut your sides to look like a weekender, so that you can use a flat panel for your hatch!

Ok, I didn't say that in a way that you understood.

What if I cut the notch out of the side, then bring the framing to meet the notched edge. That gives the hatch 1 3/8" to land on. Will that give it enough room or will it be too much. Can make the hatch ribs come inside, I think. Can't kerf and notch. Well not easily anyway.

Great picture Shell ;)

Oh sure, you could do that too... there's more than 1 way to skin a cat...

Miram,

Use your compass to make the 3/8" line below the sides. Cut it with a jigsaw, sand it smooth and you're done. You'll cover the notch with trim anyways so it doesn't have to be a laser perfect. I fretted about the notch too but now I don't know why, its easy!

Thanks all,
I still think we need pictures gallor. So ya can keep em coming.
What I really would like is a galley for Hatches/hinges. 8) Seems to be what everyone stresses about but no close ups.

Framed window instead of galley  Figured it would be more fun. ;)

Miriam, if it helps, I'm doing my hatch the Steve Frederick way. If you look at his build pics on his CD or his website, you"ll see what I mean. If you PM him, I'm sure he will be glad to give you additional info. I have his CD and go through it a couple of times a week , just to pick up ideas. I think his method is probably one of the better ones.

(For my style, anyway..... ;)
