Galley Hatch question

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby shawnkfl » Sat Mar 22, 2008 11:07 am

i'm over in largo, just south of clearwater, so tampa is not a big drive away. i don't make my over there very often, but occasionally i do. there's a junkyard over there i've been wanting to check out for some parts for another project of mine. i'll find a good weekend to that and come by to look at your hatch struts. you can get a good weight of it if you hold a bathroom scale in both hands with the hatch resting on it. lift it at least half way open and see what the weight is. then measure the open length of the struts you have already. you may have to take them off to let them fully open. should be just a clip to pry out with a flat head screwdriver and they'll pull right off. can you get a close up pic of the strut?

Shawn:

I don't mind pulling her, "Cajun Casa", to you but it would be in about 2 weeks. I will be out of town next weekend but can PM you and find out when it would be convenient for you. Thanks for the info.

Becca, you do have struts..and they in the wrong place..it's probably why your hatch is so hard to open..i'm sure some young man in here will come to a damsels aid.. 8)

Hey Paw-Paw Jimmy :)
Yeah, a couple of guys told me they were in the wrong place. Shawn lives in Largo, which is only about 45 minutes from me so he may be able to show me how to correct that. I do want to weigh my hatch...that sucker is heavy.

How's the new grandbaby doing?

Hi Becca..

I most definitely know what its like to go and build 2 hatches for my 1 tear   First one went totally wrong due to lack of studying and reading the forum... (So my wife says)

So because of that I carefully planned out my 2nd and also it is by far lighter and looks a lot better..

It doesnt mean however your hatch isnt the proper weight.. Im also yet to install the gas shocks and sort of skeptical as to where they need to be installed..and also due to not knowing.

From the photos it looks very nice as does your tear.

Becca,

Get out the bathroom scale and place a pole (2x4) between the scale and the lifted hatch. This will give you the weight of the hatch.
I would think you could take that information to Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts and they would be able to pick the correct gas lift for you.

I will take that approach when its time for me to choose.

Thanks Finn and Larry for the advice. I will borrow a scale from someone (don't own one...they lie about me). I will get this fixed somehow.

Guys you need a weight at about where your hatch supports will be also. The weight will be different than at the end of the hatch. ;)
