Started My First Tiny Travel Trailer

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby dakotamouse » Wed Jul 05, 2006 11:57 am

In front of our house I have a concrete swan. I had put off planting it cause I just couldn't decide what I wanted to put in it. Two weekends ago I found the wing of it broken off and laying in the planter. I didn't do it, the husband didn't do it and the cat swears he didn't do it. I think some fool was going to steal it and it broke off. The thing weighs about a ton! Hope they're sportin' a hernia. :x

Any way... JB Weld fixed it and I planted a really nice coleus in the middle. ;)

Un-hijacked and back to building

Postby Bob Pierce » Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:20 am

I have added some more pictures of my progress. My next step is to cut out the door(s). I haven't decided if I should do only one door and a window or two doors. I know two doors are better if two people will be camping, but one door with a window on the other side should be stronger. Any opinions?

We are going with 2 doors. In the middle of the night if nature calls...urgently, I want my own escape hatch!

Only putting one door because the loo will be on the other wall.
We're pretty good at waking each other up. After all these years we go at the same time.

Walls look good.

Back at work.

Postby Bob Pierce » Sat Aug 19, 2006 3:45 pm

After business trips to Nashville and Jacksonville, I am back at work. I have attached some new pictures with the sides of the trailer mounted to the floor. I have also used metal brackets in the front and rear of each side to help keep the sides and floor attached and to provide additional support. These brackets will not be visible in the main cabin, as they will be in the galley and the front storage area.

I also decided to go with two doors. I added more bracing today and will start skinning this coming week.

Good job, Bob-a-roo!! Hey, are those regular house windows you're using in the doors?

Keep at it, you'll be camping in no time.

Great Job Bob,
Don't let the details bog you down and you will be at it sooner than you think.

Windows

Postby Bob Pierce » Mon Nov 06, 2006 9:38 am

WarPony,

Those are special order, Miami Sliders, for house doors. They are 20" W by 24" H. They're a little larger that I wanted, but all the others ones I found were too small. I did find some RV windows that were close to the right size, but they were more expensive. These should work fine as my doors are 28" W by 36" H. They should also give me more ventilation.

New Pictures Posted

Postby Bob Pierce » Sat Jan 20, 2007 8:48 pm

I have posted new pictures of my build. The galley hatch is mounted. All insulation is installed. The roof, front and back are paneled and the front storage area is built.

I cut out and fitted the left side panels today and will mount them this week. Next Saturday I will do the right side panels.

The galley hatch hinge(s) are left over hinge material used to make Hellfire missle containers for shipment ti Iraq.

Bob, I have also been buildind a mod weekender on a 4x8 frame. Mine is on a tsc frame with a couple mods, A frame tounge and jack pads on rear. I haven't made the progress you have cuz haven't got to work to much on it since I started. I'm legally blind, health, weather, wife and my helper is side tracked for a while.

I like your rear design for your hatch. My doors are 28x38. I'm thinking of using I found for $10.00 a piece, 12x24 sliders and they are new.

Keep up the good work.

More progress

Postby Bob Pierce » Mon Feb 19, 2007 11:26 pm

I have posted some more pictures of my work. The Interior is paneled and I have put metal trim on the outside, doors and door openings. Next I plan to mount the windows in the doors and then mount the doors. After that, I'll be able to carpet the interior. It is my plan to carpet the entire interior with the exception of the front and rear shelves. :)
