The fine art of salvage

Postby es009d7705 » Sun Nov 16, 2008 7:13 pm

Hi there, here in scotland we call it midgy raken (not to be confused with the no see ems) and anything found is called a lucky. It came about when the kids from the Glasgow slum teniments used to rake the middle class middens(rubbish bins) looking for toys that had been dumped. Also a few years ago there was a tv programe called low tech and the presenter made stuff out of things he had found in skips(dumpsters) and he called the skips Low Tech Supermarkets. So when my daughter calls me a midgy raker I just tell her i am shopping in an L T Supermarket and I just remind her of all the furniture I have made. On sat she was the one who found something I just got coveed in red paint. Just keep on raken.

Fema, that's a bad word around here.... What Idiots!!!! I hear they are selling off their poison trailers now for cheap... might be a good resource if you don't use the toxic stuff... They did waste a good deal of taxpayers money on this (your word here)... passed by a place in Miss. was Fema trailers as far as you could see...Guess they'll need a bailout too... lots of Fema executives and brothers in law to pay...

The only thing wrong with those FEMA trailers was that they released them too soon. They needed time to cure before they were put into use. Because there were so many lawsuits from people who were looking for a free ride anyway, FEMA has to put the disclaimer that they are not fit for habitation. I bet you could salvage a lot off of one of those trailers
Make time for fitness and it'll make time for you.

Our motto: Never pay full price for anything. We did have to pay full price for the window because it was the only one we could find in the size that we needed. But other than that, everything was either salvaged or on sale. We buy stuff when we find it but that can cause problems too because of storage issues. We had to work around a 12 ft roll of linoleum for close to a year because we got it on clearance long before we were ready to build. Same with the door, which I love. It is a solid wood 18 inch door that we got for $5. But we moved it around more times than I can tell you because it was in the way! We probably have enough stuff here to build 2 or three more campers. Maybe I should put some of this stuff on ebay....

Just call me a midgy raker... (the hubster's family is Scottish so I guess that would be ok!)

Sherrie
Good grief, isnt it the weekend yet?
Maybe if I sleep in the camper the week
will pass faster

There's a good deal to be had on those FEMA trailers....one could easily build several TD's out of one trailer...I think they even come with coffee makers too...
FEMA is a four letter word around here... defined as bumbling Idiots wasting our tax money...something obviously learned from our politicians... :o

FEMA trailer problem illustrates that people will complain if the government didn't do anything, but bitch when what they do doesn't meet their expectation. Typical damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Now tell me why anybody in their right mind wants to be a politician or bureaucrat? I guess you only have to worry about pleasing 50% +1 of those who vote.

Elumia, with the money that "they" spent on trailers , they could have just cut everyone a check to rebuild their homes and be done with it...150K+ for a cheap 11k trailer and installation , seems a bit high in anybody's book, then they were poisoned ... FEMA executives and all the major top tiered contractors, made a most handsome profit......WHY BE A POLITICIAN ... it"s the MONEY!!!!
Where you live they only have to be fireproof ... :o

Ah, this thread brings back memories! Memories of my wife silently cursing my packrat ways over the last 18 years. But now I catch her from time to time bragging about how many thousands of dollars I've saved us by fixing something around the house with parts I've--uh--recycled. My eyes are getting misty.
Besides my camper obsession, I love hot rods, and a project I'm working on has actually made me money as I have scavenged and traded. It's a worthy goal, building a tear for nothing. How better to prove you love our natural world than to save a little bit of her each time you don't use something newly manufactured?
It's not treehugging, it's self-preservation. And it's cool.
Happy hunting!
Kelsey
__________
Go ahead and get your project started because it's just like having kids...if you wait to start until you're skilled enough or rich enough, you'll never do it. And just look at what you'd miss!
__________
In planning any project you've never attempted before, always allow for the three three's: It will take you three times longer, three times more material, and three times more money than you thought.

Hot Rods ...COOL !!! 8)
We seem to be on the verge of an era in which re-cycling used /tossed/found materials will become very important...Might as well get a jump on the rest eh????

If its in a dumpster doesn't necessarily mean it is free around my area. the company has contracted for the removal of debris and in some cases the dispasal companies do not want anyone in the dumpsters due to liability. One town in NH has made it illegal to take off the curb on trash day. Always better to ask first and have the name iof the person you asked. Learned the hard way!!!!!! At least they just let me bring the items back.
Keep on smiling, makes people wonder what you've been up to!!

Asking is always the best option, but some towns just have some really DUMB laws.... :o Makes scavenging more difficult, but not impossible ...
