Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby steve wolverton » Thu Dec 25, 2008 10:56 pm

Weight To Date: 530 pounds.

I shouldn't have any problems coming in under 700lbs. I'm aiming for less than 650 pounds now. :D

Steve, it's great fun watching your build in "real time." This build and the original Puffin have given me much to think about...

I've just about finished with my trailer and now I'm debating what to build on it. I posted my original plans to my build thread, but I keep seeing things in your thread and others that make it difficult to settle on an idea! Thanks a lot! :)

Looking forward to seeing your progress,

Brad

Wow Steve! I nodded off for a while, and look what you've accomplished!

I always liked Puffin #1. This one is even better!
Nice work! Blisterin' progress!
Awesome!

bbarry - I like your design. It reminds me a lot of Doug H.'s Rocketear without the trolley top. Take ideas from everyone. One of the great things about this board is most people don't mind that you borrow their ideas.

Steve Frederick - Thanks Steve. I have sore shoulders/back to account for that "blisterin' pace" too. ;) I want this thing done ASAP so I can sell it and build mine.

Tell me about "yours".

It's the same design as the one I'm building now. The only difference will be the skin. I want to skin it with high polished aluminum. I'm not sure where to find it, but I've seen a few campers with it, and it looks amazing. I'm sure it's really expensive too. :(

Have you decided against a queen sized bed? It wasn't clear to be from what I've seen of your build so far.

Highly polished aluminum is hard to keep that way. Ask any Airstream owner.

Steve Frederick suggested stainless. While not as glossy, it's basically maintenenace free.

No, it will have a queen. I haven't made the bottom part of the bed yet. The top part measures 64" x 47" and the bottom will be about 60" x 28". I think that's a little larger than a queen?

Polished aluminum looks so cool! We'll see when I start on mine. Stainless is way out of my budget.

I'm hoping to paint the interior and get the face plates installed today. Off I go...

The length is a little shy, a queen is 80". But the width is right.

I still suspect that once you have your current build out once or twice, that you'll have to tweak the design just a little bit.

But I like the way your current build is coming together.

Well, let me not interfere with progress. Go out there and build away!!!

Polished Aluminum!
That's my choice! I'll see if I can get the "float" vs. "glue" war worked out on my build. I've searched and read every thread on the subject! Seems there has been success and failure in both camps.
Keep the pics coming!

I had too much movement in my bed so I beefed it up. I used two 1x4's running against the spars and that did the trick. Now all kinds of fun can be had on the bed. ;)

These are the rests for the bed. Very simple. They're mounted on the strongest parts of the camper (door frame and side wall stiffeners) and floor. This panel will allow access to the electrical (if it's added).

Image
This picture shows the lower bed frame in the day position. Obviously it won't lean up against the back like that, but it gives and idea of what I'm going for. I'll probably use a closet rod and mount for the seat back rest.

Image
This picture shows the bed laid in the sleeping position. I have to pick up one more sheet of 1/4" plywood. The last sheet will finished the bed frame and the door. It took 10 sheets of 1/4" and 2.5 sheets of 1/2" for this build.

I bit the bullet on polished aluminum. It was about $150 per sheet (0.40 x 4' x 10') from Regal Plastics in Fort Worth.

I think I'm going to float it. I'll probably glue it at the edges with Sikaflex with the RV edge molding on top. I still haven't decided how to do the seams - leaning toward 3M VHB tape - but they want a fortune for that stuff.
