I used a putty tape about 3/4" wide and 1/8" thick. I bought my windows from a place that manufactured pickup toppers. The guy asked me if I had window sealant, I said no, and that is what he gave me. After doing my windows, I had just enough to do the Fantastic Fan.

I know about thr putty stuff because that was what was what I used on my vent and windows. the directions that came with the vent called for putty tape. I got it at my local RV store. Mine was 1" wide and about 1/8 " thick. What is the RV bytyl tape? Is this a better seal?.

I used 3/8" butyl from a auto parts store. It sealed very good I don't think I could ever get it off.

...we used auto windshield sealant...worked really well for us...the butyl tape is cheaper by a longshot but it was not what we wanted

8) I use putty tape here at work to install windows and mobile home doors. It works great and it comes in different widths 3/4", 1-1/2" and 1". I sell it by the roll 30'.  Peg

I have used the butyl tape type of sealants down the joints of metal roofs with great success (easy to roll down the overlapping seams). I have also had good experiences with butyl rubber caulk & a caulking gun. Back in my hippie daze... I built a few van conversions and always used butyl rubber caulk to bed the windows & skylights with. You can use mineral spirits to wipe off the excess that squeezes out. This is what the big van conversion shops used too. It is often sold in the big-box stores as "Gutter Sealant". In the last few years, I have been using "PL Urithane" caulk for most projects of this type. I don't think there is anything better for long term outdoor exposure. The only downside is that it runs about $5. a tube.
