Starting the serious design or modifcations of a 2+2 TD based on Andrew's design. I want to add a 2" receiver at the rear for a Canoe rack of bicycle rack. What size tubing do I need to accept the retail racks made by Yakima?

The easiest thing to do is go to any auto parts store and buy a receiver hitch. The bumper mounted one welded upside down on the back of the frame (a little support if necessary) works great. You then have the extra support ring in the front and the pin hole in the correct place.
I bought mine at Tractor supply.
here is a pic of mine from e-trailer

Thanks Kai, That would be the easiest way since I would be laying out a custom frame anyway!

A word of caution on the 2 1/2" tubing. Most tube is welded, the weld bead running full length along one side. I bought a stick, thinking I could grind the weld and make my own receiver tube... WRONG. I'll make you a real good deal if you want to try yourself!

Thanks Lenny. I'm not going to make my own, but that's one additional reason why I shouldn't. I'm just going to follow Kai recommendation and either buy the receiver tube or a universal hitch.

The reciever that I welded on my tear was $10 at the local farm supply store
