Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

As you will see in the pics I had the idea to laminate the hinge under the roofing. And this would have worked great until I cut the hinge so the hatch will open. Then I realized it would leave an opening very close or right at the edge of the roofing

So far my best thought is to get another hinge, and don't put the last two screws in that you have shown in your picture.

Even with that style hinge, you want it to hang over the edge of the teardrop by 1/2" or so...

Just thinking since I have used the same kinda hinge:

Final skin over the hinge from the top body side.

Remove the hatch from the hinge, final skin the hatch, then re-attach the hatch/hinge on top.

Looks like if you keep the hatch fairly tight to the body at the top, you might be ok.

Use some good sealant and nice aluminum trim on top to cover the whole mess up?

I was afraid of that Has anyone ever used the plastic hinge for the doors.

I've got 6 feet. Anybody need to purchase 6 feet of 3" plastic hinge?

You only have one choice. Replace it like mike said. If you try to seal it I would think you will have a leak sooner or later. I have a question. Shouldn't you have the hinge under the roof skin but over the hatch skin, like shingles or flashing on a roof? If you keep your hatch skin over the hinge definitely use alot of RVPutty, or silicone inbetween the hinge and the skin. I would also skin short by about 1/4" (from the "Hinge Barrel") to allow for a good bead of silicone. I would do this on the roof skin also. This should seal it pretty well. I used Grant's hinge. It mounts on top of the skin. I liberly applied silicone under the hinge and also ran a bead along the edge after mounted. No leaks!

Gerdo, Yes I'll have to replace it yuck. But I guess it's been going to well so far. Something was bound to happen. I tossed up what kind of hinge to use and I thought a smooth look would be neat. I had the sealing all worked out until I messed up and cut it like I did. I guess it's back to square 1

Has anyone ever used the plastic hinge for there doors? Will it hold the weight of a vertical door? I have to figure out what to do with 6'x3"of good hinge. I'm not about to let it go to waste. Maybe I can use it on my Cabinet doors also

I am sorry you had such a big boo boo. You can probably use any hinge on your door that you use on your hatch.

OR there is allways #2 or #3.

The Wife would love to hear about a #2 or #3. I comented after my mess up how I'd have to tear the hole thing down and start over. She asked how I liked being married. She did take the having to buy another hinge really well. Now I have to decide weather to go the same route or not.

So you think the plastic hinge will hold the weight of the door without sagging? now or down the road

I don't know if any of these thoughts or ideas have changed your mind on how you will proceed but one thought on still try to use the sme hinge
would be to take it off and turn it up side down so the cuts are on the top , seal it well and then cover it with the skin. You might also use an innertube in some kind of way.
Just some thoughts.

I think that's what I was trying to say, but your question is clearer!

Joamon has a good idea too, flip it!

I had a 25' roll I used it for my hatch and for interior horizontal lids, etc. gave the rest away...

I didn't use it for my exterior doors tho it should work, just make sure your door is hung properly as it would be hard to adjust/tweak!

Hey Scott,

I agree with Keith, since you are going to skin the roof and hatch over the hinge, just flip it and put that notch at the top. That little spot that is going to be exposed can be filled with sealant. I used silicone on/under my plastic hinge. Not many things will stick to the plastic, but you can sure fill any possible void with silicone. Here's how I used the plastic hinge, but it dosen't have the smooth effect you are after.

Gave that some thought might give it a try beats bying another hinge

Jim, I tossed around the idea of what hinge to use and because I like to be different and wanted a smooth look I went this way. Of corse now I'm re thinking the hurricane hinge. I'll try flipping it first. I'm stuburn when I get an idea in my head
