Has anyone tried this variety of plastic hinge? Reports of experience good or bad would be appreciated. Also opinions good or bad welcome. I did read the stickey about this subject.

Hey Ralph-

Is that JC Whitney OR McMaster-Carr? It looks like a McMaster-Carr catalog #?

I used that one, got mine from Monroe Engineering.

Works great!

Cheers,

Coop

I think that is McMamaster Carr. I just bought my second 3" wide 7' piece from them,. they are great to deal with had my order next day. Both times
Got the first one on and messed up the cut and now it's to short. I liked how it worked so I ordered it again. Haven't installed that one yet.

Plastic hinge

It may have been McMaster Carr..

I am an old fart and have a tendancy to forget stuff pretty fast.

I have a stainless steel piano hinge currently installed on my Tiny. It is in between the body and the hatch and is folded when the hatch is closed. I have a rubber strip glued to the up-wind side that covers the opening well moving or not. It has a tendancy to leak when the hatch is open or if parked down hill.

I would mount a plastic hinge in the same manner (sandwitched between when closed) Anyone tried that? I think if I sealed it well with silicon on each side it would be waterproof without the rubber cover (which is black on a white body) They even have a white plastic hinge.

Any and all remarks will be welcome and appreciated.

I'm not following you. Is your hinge between the body and the outside skin?

just reread it I follow you now. I would think you would get a better seal over the long run with it flat while the hatch is in the closed position.

Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions

Sandwiched between when closed? It'll probably leak (my opinion), the hinge will pucker where the screws are put into it, and nothing sticks to the plastic very good, but with luck and lots of silicone it might work. How about putting on between the spars and the skin? That way you can leave a little sticking out on the ends to divert water away from the hatch. I covered my plastic hinge with wood strips.

That's the way I'm going with mine

Of corse don't make the extra cut. That's what cost me a new hinge :x

Yup it WAS Monroe Engineering Products "Living Hinge" I looked at before...

They sell a minimum of 50' per roll, but their prices are less than half of those on the catalog page in this thread, so maybe it would make sense to buy a whole roll and not worry about making mistakes. It also seems to me that for the price of a hurricane hinge one could wrap the whole TD in this stuff...(just kidding, there are tons of other things I could hinge with this plastic...)

Thanks for lending me your eyes and ears! Ilya
