Cabinet advice

Postby dulcimerbob » Thu Dec 28, 2006 12:56 pm

I am redoing the cabinet doors in my 70s vintage TTT. The veneer is delaminating on the doors so I was thinking about taking off the veneer down to solid wood and replacing it with Formica or some sticky back tile. Any advice etc. on this ? Thanks

I would keep the wood look- If you can't repair the originals, use them as templates and make new ones. Match the stain up as close as you can.

Do you have the pictures of the problem? Veneers can be re-glued back on quite often.

If the main part of the wood door is still in good shape then re-veneer! I have an old Triumph TR-6 with a wood dash. When I bought it the dash was in bad shape. the dash is a 9 ply 1/2" with an English Oak Veneer.I took my beltsander to it and got it down to solid wood. I contact cemented new veneer onto it. Let it overhand the edges, cut it off with a sharp utility knife. Stain and poly. My dash looks like new and it cost me a fraction of a new dash.

I'm with Gerdo, applying a veneer isn't that hard if all the surfaces are flat. Curves are another story. I covered some speakers with oak veneer; it wasn't that hard to do and they look great.
