Insulation - a different material

I have access to sheets of sound deadening type material that you find in heavy construction engine shrouds that is made out of a compressed cotton type cloth. The sheets are about 1 inch thick.
It would definitely provide great sound deadening and insulation. I'm just wondering whether it is likely to suffer moisture problems even in a sealed cavity. Has anyone used this kind of material before?

It does have some sort of "backing paper" on one side but it is not like a waterproof membrane or anything. It is more like the paper they use to adhere the shredded cotton to.
You would not want to get this stuff wet.
On the other hand it has to endure the temperature variations of an engine bay so it's not too delicate either.
Haven't got any photos of it, but you probably wouldn't learn much from a photo anyway.

Sounds like carpet padding. It'll probably work, but how heavy is it?

I can't imagine them using cotton in that type of application so you might want to find out what it is made of. If it was soundproofing for housing or business I wouldn't worry but some things shouldn't be confined with people.

It's not heavy.
It can be bent and cut to any shape.
I have found a label on it stating that it is made by a company called Rieter.
I am checking them out to see if I can get more info.
