My only concern with your design is that you removed so much material from what should be the structural part of your door. Would adding a little bit of insulation there really make a difference over just leaving it a solid piece of plywood with a hole for the window?

I did pretty much the same thing, the only place I left much was the hinge and latch areas. Even filled it full of holes to light it up. Works fine.
