Thoughts and help with a exterior finish idea.

Postby elmo » Fri Mar 09, 2007 11:47 am

I have been trying to figure out how to finish off my Teardrop exterior and I think I come up with a way thanks to Keith B talking about if it didn't turn out he would just cover it with bumper stickers.

Here is the idea. Gather vintage and vintage looking pictures, bumper stickers, and post cards and put them on randomly and epoxy or some other method over the top.

I have been in bars that have pictures and various things epoxied onto to the bar top and can't see any reason this wouldn't work on the side of the Tear. I would probally just paint the top. Any thought...other ideas...and the best method to do this would be appreciated.

Later on I might be asking for some help with pictures, post cards, and bumper stickers...so keep your eyes open please.

Elmer

You will be a decouper

Dear Elmo,

It is called decoupage and there are lots of info on the web. Check out the experts in this. They really know how to protect from UV fading and the like.

Elmer--it just ain't gonna hold up and will wind up looking cheesey.

Not cool or stylish at all--just gawdy.

You have too much time and gelt (Yiddish word for money) invested in this thing to make it look like a bad rolling advertisement.

Someone here did this with a map of the country, and although it was interesting to look at for a second, I don't think you want something like that forever.

Just my opinion as you know, but you ALSO know that when it comes to you, I'm not just posting crap here for the hell of it. Think long and hard about this idea.

Also, remember that these interesting lines/profiles that TDs have will be obliterated by just pasting garbage on it.

Not really sure what I think of that idea. It seems to me that it could end up really wonderful or looking like garbage as Ira says. If you go with it, I do know that it will be very novel and unique. Should draw a lot of attention where ever it goes. 8)

Hmmmm....you got me thinking now. I am just trying to think of something different.

The worst that could happen is I can't stand it and it looks like sh*t and I put aluminum over it at some point. I am not giving up on this idea yet!

Anyone have any exciting ideas or thoughts?

That ain't gonna be so easy to do since you gotta install TRIM in ten million spots. It's just not all that easy to cover up bad skins with aluminum or other wood skins after you're all "done"--it's a lot more work.

Come on--go woody. You know how good WOODIES always feel. (You know that at least twice.)

I've killed a lot of brain cells here also. I was just going to use aluminum, but the steel/metal place here sort of ticked me off...long story, but I did talk to the VP of the company this a.m., a nice gentleman from the Ontario area. Stay at home dads have a lot of time to think of ways to get even with bad customer service.

I didn't plan on doing the top...just the sides. This idea is still better than the one I had to make it look like a can of Spam. Maybe I will rethink that one.

I was thinking rather than have one huge collage, just use a solid "background" beige, white, light blue or something and put some unique prints random .... so that they stand out but don't overwhelm the whole side....

Or, no offense intended.... I'm sure you've thought of having an Elmer Fudd cartoon or character.... kinda like that Orange Pumpkin with the Charlie Brown character....

There are so many themes....
Some things are way over my head !! ...but it keeps me looking UP!

I do have a comment for this but it is a family channel.

I am told I look like a cartoon on numerous occasions...not sure how to take that.

But actually Elmer Fudd did cross my mind at one point. I am told I look like Bull from the show Night Court...maybe there is away to work that in.

I read the posts over again...my idea wouldn't cover the whole side of the tear...just maybe 10 or so old post card and 10 or so vintage looking pictures randomly placed. Like Oklahomajewel described.

Like people used to do with luggage and trunks as they traveled around the world.

I suggest using photo shop, paint shop pro, or your favorite package, and mocking up the concept digitally before you commit any epoxy to the idea... It would shed a lot of light on the subject.

Mike...

You could always put small cartoon blurbs in a few spots, like Dougs new quilt block.
