Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Good Morning,

I was outside having a smoke last last night and admiring the Teardrop and its new skin...

I noticed the sides and the top grain do not match at all.

So, I think I am going to get 2 more sheets of the 1/8" Birch and skin the sides.

Now, I already have Spar Urethane on the sides. So, do I have to sand all the way down to the bare wood in order to glue the new skin on??

I may as well do it now, cause, I have put to much blood, sweat and tears in it not to be happy with the appearance AND before I trim the top overlaping edges.

You can glue right over it,I would sand the panel just to give the glue something to grab onto,The urethane is soaked into the wood and isn't going to let go unless you use a glue that will break down the urethane.
Roughen it up a little and glue away! Nice lookin finish by the way! Aaron

MK...you do not haveta sand all the way down...especially since you would probably have to take a 32nd or so off to get past where the urethane has soaked in...use a fairly aggressive sandpaper (80 grit or so) and give it a good sanding to give some tooth to the surface for adhesive to grip...then use a poly based constuction adhesive similar the what you used on the roof and hatch...you are absolutely right...better to doit now rather than latter...

When I started the build it never crossed my mind you could skin the sides, So I didn't plan on it. But I see now why one would want too.

This just added another week to my build, but I know it's going to look so much better!!

Thanks Steve, You should see it with the 3rd coat on it. After all the urethane I have brushed on, I think I now have the hang of it. The sides were my first attempt and they are not smooth at all. Another reason the skin them...

Beginners, use light even continuous strokes to apply all coats. Also Invest in a good brush. Something with fine bristles. Oh and buy a big can of Mineral Spirits and clean the brush with it with a min of 2 rinses.

I really hate evil smelling black stuff. That is my 3rd favorite. I like the dance and the one where we are done and at Bistineau Best.

I think what you've got there is fine...
I don't think I've seen a woody where the side walls have the grain running vertical. The woody's I've seen have the grain on the sides and the roof, just like you do right now.
Adding a profile trim makes better sense to me, if the grain directions of the wood seem to clash in your eye, than going backwards and skinning the sides...
But this is your project, so what ever floats your boat is good... It's going to be one nice looking teradrop for sure!

I am with Dean on this, if you want the wood to be the same color you use dyes or paint. I think you will find that when you add trim the pieces my be a shade off(even on the same board)

If you get trim that is closer to the color of the top it will frame the side nicely and make the top look closer to that is what you intended.

Besides in Florida a lighter top will relect more heat.

Awesome job, it is difficult to see from pictures that you do not have dedicated woodworking tools and that you have not built more than 1.
