Screwing Question

I am in the home stretch! :)

I just recieved my molding from Grant and want to put together a shopping list.

I got the regular RV molding and what kind of screws and length did everyone use? (3/4" walls)

For the galley molding did you use the same? And does the lip of the molding go toward the galley or toward the outside?

T molding same question on what kind of screws.

Also a diamond plate question...would you put along the side of the molding or underneath?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, not sure what length, but I would make sure they are Stainless Steel.

Keep your mind out of the gutter! :R

This title was a little tamer than a couple of other ones I had. :)

Mary....

I wish I could kick back and enjoy a couple more beers, but the Cooler by the Lake Gathering is coming up to quick, so I had to resort to doing shots.

Yours has alot more detail than mine and looks alot better. I am going to yours as a template for my next one! (I can't believe I keep saying the next one) :?

elmo,
I too got my moldings Grant. We haven't put them on, but I have bought the screws and put together a shopping list.
For the edge molding going at the top, we got #8s, 1" length stainless steel and you could get either pan head or truss head. Many of our screws we got truss head because the head is flatter and a little bigger than pan heads. For our roof we used 3/8" bendable plywood so that is probably a little thicker than what you used is one reason we used 1".
We also are using these screws for the hurricane hinge.

For the drip molding we are using #8 Truss head, 1/2" (we have 3/4" walls)

We are using what Grant would call counter top edging ( it is flat with just a little curved edge on one side that just barely goes over the edge) on our 3/4" galley wall, we are using the same molding around the door opening except where the hinge is. For this we are using #6s (the predrilled hole is a little small for the #8s) in a 3/4" length. Again we are using the truss heads because they are a little flatter and stainless steel.
We are also using these same screws for the T-molding as my husband wants a smaller head.

Depending on how you do your hatch that is a different deal, we are planning on using some kind of rivet but haven't gotten that far.

We tended to get the same size screws as we could, where some could problably be 3/4" of an inch instead of 1", depending on where you buy them you can get a better deal if you buy more.

I listed all the things that were going to need screws and how many then figured out what size I wanted. We bought like 350 screws.

Hope this helps.
Martha ;)

Check out ACE hardware stores. They sold SS screws in whole boxes for a lot less than the little baggies at HD and Lowes. Also, make sure you predrill all your holes. The SS is very soft and will strip in a second if it hits too much resistance. I'd also use a fresh screw tip sized correctly. If you strip a screw, they are sometimes hard to get out with breaking off flush. Use two cordless drills if you got 'em and go one or two at a time. Consider a dab of silicone in the holes for a little bit of security.

Another place that sell lots of stainless screws are marine stores. Some people buy them on the internet, and if you do a search you will find some listed on this forum. I happen to have a speciality bolt store locally that has all kinds, which is where I got most of them except one box at a marine store. All of them were cheaper than the box stores.

I was buying SS screws from a guy on eBay for cheap. I didn't have the foresight to order enough of them so I got tired of waiting by the mailbox. I ended buying some locally at a Fastenal store. Check them online to see if there is a store near you.

Most screws will come in 3 flavors: Pan head, Oval head, and Flat head. The ones you will want are pan head screws. Oval and flat are for countersunk applications.

I used the flat head screws and counter sunk them.

Pan head will work if you leave enough gap between the door and body. As mentioned above, if you have two drills it will save a lot of time changing from drill bit to driver bit.
I think most of my screws were #8 X 1" SS.

...we used #8x1"SS for most all exterior applications...pan heads for the insert molding and oval heads(countersunk) for door trim and galley edge trim...we used auto windshield sealant/adhesive(Evil Black Stuff) on all trim including a dab in all screw holes(predrilled)...we got them from Fastenal...best prices on batch lots we could find...they have storefronts all over the country and internet sales as well...we tried #6 ovals on the door/galley trim but had major problems with them stripping out on both the heads and shanks
madjack 8)

p.s. we used #8x3/4 SS pan heads for the door hinges and x1.25 for the hatch hinge
