I know this has been asked before and I may have asked it years ago.... years did I say years .... :? I ment a time back.....

How old is this forum now???

anyway .... I used Oak for the floor that keep siting on its side still oozing tar on things..... (another subject) any how .... I will soon be attaching 2x2's across the roof for extra support I might put something heavy up there.

I am looking at pine but maybe I should be looking at other woods.

So what type of woods do you folks use??

Ron D. biting the bit and ready to run....

I use 5/4 S2S poplar for a lot of cabinet framing because it is available here up to about 10" wide and knot free for $2.50 - $3.00 a bd. ft. Much stronger than pine for not much more money and an easy wood to work.

I used Cypress for my roof spars that I planed to 1-1/2 x 1-1/4. It is as stong as pine, mayble a bit lighter in weight, machines well. The best characteristic is that is insect proof and laughs in the face of water. Where I wanted extra strength for fastenings, I used mahogany, also good for applications where water might creep in.

Ron, do you have a table saw? I have a big stock of WWII era 2x8 rafters, probably doug. fir, cluttering up a garage in Morro Bay. Check your PM message box for my number.

In airplanes, Spruce and Fir are also good if you are looking to save weight (which I am).
