In building a hatch, people create there own problems. Building a hatch is no different than building the teardrop except smaller. Listen to the dumb that had problems building thiers and you'll have problems. Listen to those that had no problems and it'll go like a breeze. Look at thier work. End of lesson. And by the way, nice Tongue Box.

Maybe I shouldn't have used dumb. Oh well.

Gage are you stating that I was one of the dumb due to the fact I had problems in succeeding in my 1st..and why is it that the 2nd turned out the way it was supposed to? Never having built one in my life and building it far away from the Tear Hobbyists in general.? With nothing to compare to or even seeing one ...

Its far different getting advice over a forum than it is putting the actual into practice and doing the building.. wouldnt you agree ?.

Id say think before you speak ..not everyone was born with a hammer and saw in their hands... at least Ive never come across it..

I think the want to succeed is one key factor and persistence is another.
If you make a mistake fix it if its fixable or try again.. laugh at yourself and go on. Practice makes better.

Some are born with Craftmanship in their vains and others learn it the other way..by doing. Some never learn a specific trade or field no matter how they try..

Why does the hatch seem to intimidate so many? I thought it was a breeze to build, I built mine in place and it was a very simple procedure,
are some of you building them separately or something?
I dont want to seem arrogant but it really was one of the easier parts of construction.
I simply mounted the spars in place and sheeted them while
they were temporarily screwed to the sides. I cant see how this could be complicated? Again, I dont mean to trivialize hatch construction, but it seems pretty foolproof. (I really dont mean to insult anyone)
Just build it! it's not as hard as you may think! Aaron

Some are scared of water.. Some are scared to fly and some of other things..

Experience from onhand doing is the best way to learn anything..and the want or will to learn..

I can also say that yes it is easy now... and yes your correct its not that difficult.. But I did it my way and it works for me..

And Im happy with it..thats what counts.

Its not a question of being dumb..

Finn, did you read the very last line of my post. And I haven't seen where you swore the first hatch you built was the way to build a hatch. I also don't think you would have had to build it a second time if you had listened to the ones who had no problems building just one hatch the fit properly. How's that old saying go? If the shoe fits, wear it. But if it doesn't fit, don't worry about it. ;)

I don't think anyone should fear a hatch, but I know without actually seeing one done, the job is more difficult. I grew up without knowing how to hammer anything....... I ended up in the sales end of a construction company. I watched the boys over a few years and then went on my own. After babysitting about 6 crews I decided that I wanted to be a hands on owner. I applied what I learned from the boys and took my best guy and off we went. We did well. So if I can learn, anyone can learn. But I learned from my mistakes, not my successes. "Dumb" is not learning from the mistakes, "dumb" is not attempting a TD build because you are scared, "dumb" is buying a 45' RV when a TD is far more impressive.

I looked at everyones hatch.. and I did it my way..and far away from anyone elses hatch...   I never saw one live ... until now. The one I successfully built ...Finally.

Persistence..and Will Power have its own rewards..And no Gage I never said that my way was the way to build a hatch...and I never will say that.
Not even now..

But I did get your attention enough to respond to anything I have ever written here..

You still remind me of the Movie - 2 Old Grumpy Grandpas that go Camping and Fishing together...

PS Gage the Last Line - No I didnt read it.. the Print was too small..

Like the dude from Iowa said. "In place" :)

The second picture shows the hatch just laying in place. Just place the hatch hinge across
the top edge and screw in place. Piece of cake.

Looks like the only difference in the way we made our hatch Gage is that you have different looking clamps and a few more than us...plus your build was done inside...   Plus your shop is warmer than ours..

And is that your first hatch or your second hatch? Looks like yours is inside to me. I just had a more solid roof. And yes I had a good heater.

I guess we're still on subject.
