Trimming Galley walls

Postby Airspeed » Sat May 19, 2007 3:28 pm

I have been trying to find some U shaped aluminum to slide on the 3/4" thick side walls of my galley, I have aluminum on the inside as well as the outside and cant figure a way to hold both on as well as seal the hatch at the same time. I was looking for some rubber U shaped seal but cant find it in a size that will fit over the two layers of aluminum and the 3/4" plywood wall.
How do you guys (and gals) seal a hatch in this situation? The edge I am trying to seal is the one with the tape holding on the aluminum.
I am up for any ideas at this point! Thanks! Aaron

I used the black Fast Cap brand peel & stick vinyl edge banding ( Fast Edge) that is used to band cabinet shelves in the shop or in the field.
It doesn't delaminate and can be trimmed with a razor or just sanded with a sanding block like I did. It comes in colors and wood grains. You'll need to glue your aluminum and plywood and anything else that's loose before applying this product.:D Danny

I used aluminum angle on the innner and outer edges. I cut aluminum flashing to fill the gap in between (my walls are thicker). Then I installed Grants hatch seal. If you just annealed some 3/4" angle and used Grants hatch seal it should work.

I have 3/4" walls on mine and aluminun skin on the outside. I used 3/4" aluminum channel counter edge molding. I was wide enough to go over the plywood and skin. It was a soft enough aluminum that I was able to mold it to the curve without kinking. I used the tires to help bend it. The channel fit into the tread just right to for it. Countersunk the screws and then put self adhesive foam weatherstrip on it. It has worked well so far for me.

Besides the galley edge, I used the same method on the side on the door opening. The side door has the seal on the door "T" molding.

Hope this helps,

Jack
