There's gotta be resonably priced window options

Postby csdivine » Mon May 21, 2007 10:12 am

HOLY MOLY BATMAN!! I put in a request for a price quote to All-Rite for a non-slider (picture) type window with clear glass, radius corners, and black frame & clamp ring to fit in an opening I've framed in the front of my benroy. The window opening is 8" H x 24" W. The price for the window, including crating and shipping, came to almost $500!!! Hello?? Anyone have suggestions for something a little more reasonably priced?

Thanks,
Chris

Salvage yard or RV salvage  That is a pretty small window so you might try making your own.

Good luck

All-Rite is very pricey because they cater to the big time RV crowd. Check out some of the Teardrop parts vendors or E-bay. That's where many deals are had.

Chris, I hate to tell ya this but ya got it bassackwards...you should of had the window and framed for it instead of framing a hole and hoping to find a window to fit...we use a 15x24 black framed radiused window(slider w/screens) that is tinted...it came from RedNeck TrailerSupply for 65 bucks...I just looked onnna couple of sites and none of them has the window you are looking for...good luck on the hunt........

I decided to (for now) go with a 8x24 sheet of 1/4" plexiglass from eStreetPlastics for $7.99 (plus $3 shipping) and build my own window frame. It'll serve the purpose, which is to let in some light and act as a port-hole. Count this as one of many lessons learned along the way to TD mastery!

Chris, the box and hardware stores in our area all sell polycarbonate (lexan) and it half as thick and 4(?) times as strong and much more resistant to cracking and the dreaded UVies than the plexiglass will be...

The thick stuff can stop a bullet too. You know, for when people are shooting at you...when you're in your tear...as long as they aim for the window and not the wood...nevermind.

In my current build, I want two windows on each side... maybe Chris's idea of a non-opening window will work for one on each side.. never thought of that..

After doing a lot of checking, I'll be ordering mine from Lil Bear... I find them cheap compared to the rv places with what Chris found, $500/window...

Gotta get back into the building frame of mind.. it's coming slowly...

Chris:

With the thought of a one piece window that you want:

Many ... would choose the window before cutting the hole, however here is a sources close to your size. Maybe you could make a frame or cut to fit your trailer for one of these windows from TJ Trailer supply? They seem reasonable and do have your radial black frame you desire? http://tinyurl.com/36wsef

On another note:
Here is a fixed window instillation thread that might help in formulation?

I bought 3 RV windows (crank outs w/screens) for $35 each off of eBay from an RV parts/salvage vendor.

I'll probably also install a few small fixed windows made out of Lexan once I decide on size shape & location.

a trip to the boneyard will reveal a plethora of old truck and Van windows , especially on those old Kustom vans .... alot of them still in excellent shape long after the vehicle has gone south...a little haggling with the management and you'll have an armload for cheap, real cheap...
Got an old K van in a neighbors yard down the street , abandoned , 4 perfect windows for a TD and the back windows will be super for my TD solar cooker lens...waiting for salvage ... me... hahahaha
Look around ... cheap is where ya' find it ...

sounds like cutting a bigger hole to use the same windows MJ used will save you big bucks! with an added bonus of more light.

Well, I decided to follow Madjack's advice. Stopped at Home Depot today and (for $13.95) got an 18" x 24" piece of 0.093" clear polycarbonate (Lexan). Considering that it is UV pretected, 200x stronger than glass and many times stronger than Plexiglass, it should work perfectly for what I'm doing.
