Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

OK..OK..I know this has been talked about before , but I cant seem to get a clear picture of what the all around best undercoating is to use between the frame to floor. I see that some people use varnish (like Camp-inn) and some people go to the other extream and use roofing tar. Now I see people talk about "duraliner" bed liner as undercoating.
Now the first thing is Camp-inn - What kind of varnish do they use for undercoating that can stand up to the pressure of rain off the tires while drivin thru rain?
2nd thing -Tar is to messy for me
and 3rd - can bed liner be used on wood, It dose seem that if it went on thick enough it would undercoat well.
Any help would be great.

Evil smelling black goo (aka fibered roofing) is cheap and works.
but it is messy.

Varnish is almost cheap and works it is messy too.

Rino works but is expensive

Epoxy works and is expensive but is tougher than varnish and water proof
it is messy too.

What else. Ordinary paint will work too.

Check out my album for a picture of a Rhino lining sprayed as an underbody coat. They did a great job, but it wasn't cheap. I had to deliver my trailer shell to them upside down. They painted on a primer that would allow their product to work. Then they masked and sprayed a coating no more than 1/8" as per my instructions (to keep the weight down) and baked it on to cure and set it. I am quite happy with it. I've got a lot of worries, but road splash under my trailer is not one of them.

as for the bedliner stuff , they make a roll on style that I can buy from a local hardwear store for about 40$ a kit ,give or take.

I am thinking about the -spar varnish- , but dont know to much about it . Is "spar" the name of the product or the company who makes it and where can I get it ?

You can get it at any hardware, paint or box DIY store. The floor also isn't subjected to a lot of UV rays so you could use floor finish. Some real hard stuff too.

I coated my entire frame with some stuff I got from Napa parts store,I cant remember the brand but it cost about $16 and two cans put on a nice thick rubbery coating, I am going to spray the underside of my tear with it when I can pull it out of the shop. It goes on really thick and sticks like crazy to anything. I will check the brand out tomorrow and post it here, I would recomend this stuff to anyone who wants an easy to apply sealer for the underside.

Airspeed.. Yes could you get the name of the product you used . This sounds like the thing im looking for.

Whatever you all decide to undercoat with---it is easier to do before you build. Especially if it is painted or troweled on.

...we used several coats on MinWax ClearShield...a heavy bodied, outdoor rated polyurethane...thinned about 10% and sprayed on...poly, asphalt emulsion(cheap and effective), epoxy, bed liner, undercoating or even a good house paint will be effective....

How about duracoat truck bed liner. Sprays on like spray paint but is heavy bodied took a little over 2 cans for the 5x8 base. I was planning to place galvanized steel sheets (old swimming pool wall) over frame but found some 4x6 lexan panels for $6.00 each so used two of them as my rock guard on top of frame but under the wood deck.

1 other thing I was looking at was the Minwax Spar Urethane ,it says it can be used for indoor and outdoor use . So it sounds like I could use it to coat the under carage ,the outside and the inside of the TD.
Any Ideas or has any one used this product?

Scott...Camp-Inn uses a similar product and sprays the whole unit with it...inouttopbottom and all around........

p.s. we really like the MinWax ClearShield...have used it on several outdoor products/projects and it has held up very well over the years............

Its really was not all that bad. Kind of fun actually!!!



AND CHEAP!!! $6 a Gallon Enough for 2 coats and some on the bottom of the Battery box and side wall edges. And I still have some left. By far the easiest option.

The stuff I used is Napa Brand 4500 premium undercaoting spray,It comes out very thick and goes along way,it stays flexible and rubbery after it sets up. Aaron

Madjack.... is that ClearShield a paint or a urethane or what?
