Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I'm thinking to hang about two feet off the back of the trailer. I figure with a more basic galley, and using 2x4's for the floor framing it should be ok. What do you think, is this going too far? By the way, I'm also thinking of going 5 feet high, rather than 4 so I can have a little more headroom.

I have another question about the construction of the floor. I'm not sure if I got this right - coat the underside of the floor with roofing tar, install the insulation, then put the insulated side down. What is protecting the insulation from road debris and water, or am I forgetting something?

I made a samich for my floor. Most put a thin layer on the bottom and coat it with Tar stuff or other coating. Others have just left the insulation and used fender washers to keep it up.

You can hang the back out but you need to move the axle so you don't end up severely out of balance. You can also hang it over the front some.

Well, now that you mention it by overhanging to the rear only I would have to move the axle back pretty far and it may be better to overhang on the front also. Good point. On the whole, though, does it sound reasonable to build a 5x10 on a 4x8 trailer or am I just being too much of a cheapskate?

..if you hang it 2' off the back, you probably couldn't move the axle far enough back to balance properly...iff'n I were you, I would extend the tongue and extend it out front and back...iff'n I were me, I wouldn't doit but rather build a custom frame

Why don't you go 5 by 9, and either extend 6" front and back or 12" front?

As far as the undercoating goes, people do it a million ways. I did it the Cubby way, which is the simplest:

I used the black goo, and then just tucked in the insulation (foil side out) and secured with some screws and fender washers. There's not much "damage" that road debris is gonna seriously cause--plus, it's just cheap insulation.

It ain't pretty, but no one's looking there anyway--and it's easy.
