Need some advice on door hinges....I'm stripping the sides of the SlumberMAX and will have a full length accent strip that will go front to back. So I need to fix the door position, and window, before that full length strip is applied so it lines up correctly.

Which leads me to door hinges....

I know nothing about hinges. I had it in the back of my mind to use a pair of good quality lift off hinges for the door...but I know most everyone uses piano hinges. Are there pros and cons? Would lift off hinges work?...I have a full 36 inches on the hinge side of the door, so I could get a standard length piano hinge. But if I didn't..can you cut a piano hinge? Thanks...Juneaudave

I bought a 6 foot piano hinge at a marine place, and cut it to make 2 - 3foot hinges.. I think it is 'dimpled' so the pin won't slide out.. never a problem.

And I think I got the widest I could, like 2 inch, so each flange had 1 inch purchase on door and frame...

I saved this site a while ago...I think Mike was the 1st to post it; If your looking for formed hinges they will bend them for you....

Dave, the lift off hinges will work quite well...I know that a number of bulders have used them....you can cut a piano hinge but be sure and re-dimple the knuckle on the cut end to keep the pin from sliding out.....

I used lift off hinges from Austin hardware. They work great.

I used the ones in the link. There are left and right sides and you'll need two of each.

Link shows two numbers.. one is heavy duty...

I'd go with the heavy duty anyway...

heavy duty = 4screws per hinge half...
light duty = 2 screws per hinge half...

...get the heavy duty version.......

For my Coach I'm just using reg 4" gate hinges from Stanely. They are regular door hinges, but painted black. I decided I couldn't use a piano hinge because I'm putting the "gingerboard" as Mike calls it around the door, and the P hinges were not wide enough. They won't screw into the door,only the molding on the outside.

By the way.......I thought my shop was messy, but if they had the "Messiest workshop" contest right now ...You would be a shoo-in.....
