hinge for tounge box

Postby dewayne » Tue Jun 05, 2007 9:56 am

I'm wondering what type of hinge and how most of you with home built tounge boxes build your lids and make them water tight. My box is 36 across back 12 front to back 27 across front and 18 deep. It will contain battery, battery charger and 11lb bottle.
Any imformation will be appreciated.

I used a SS piano hinge and found out it leaked at the 2006 Spring Flood (Fling) in Randal, WA. Since then I covered the hinge with bicycle inner tubing held down with a piece of 1/8" x 1/2" aluminum flat stock. Now the hinge is water tight. :) Danny

I was also designing the Towbox Cover on mine and I decided to do the following as if I was building another hatch..in miniature style..

I need to cut 1 or 2 more ribs.. the top and bottom is Urpean Oak..
Here in Finland the Battery needs to be securely fastened .. also there are boxes that we can purchase for batteries so that they will be in an enclosed case in total.

Also either with the stainless piano hinge or a marine style hinge..I sat and looked at the towbox for hours as If I was watching Tv.. :scratchthinking: :coffee: :designing:
Here are a few photos of what Im doing..All ply for the outer skin is cut and also the aluminum..

Make sure you screw a strip of aluminum over the inner tube on both sides of the hinge knuckle and then use a utility knife to trim off the excess inner tube. The hinge is screwed on the inside edges of the lid & box. I used the same sealer on it as all my other trim.:D Danny
