Under counter layout

Hello all,

I'm getting ready to start building the cabinets and countertop for my tear. I'm loosely following the Generic Benroy plans. In browsing through the Hall Of Fame builds, I see a lot of people eliminate the "two cabinets and three drawers" under the galley countertop, in favor of room for a large cooler, camp stove/oven, plumbing, electrical, and other things.

I'm wondering if y'all can tell me what you decided on and any advantages or (more importantly) disadvantages you've found for the layout you chose?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, I started with the cooler under the counter and took it out. I just didn't think it was a good use of space for my galley. Check this thread to see what I did.

That's my version of the Generic Benroy. Let me know if you want to see it sometime. I work across from Costco by Nike. I can bring it to work some time.

Chris, It all depends on what YOU want. I didn't feel the need to carry the ice chest in the galley since I would have to get out of the tow vehicle to get something cold especially with bikes on the rear sometimes. We didn't want a sink since you can't wash and rinse in one bowl and didn't want to slop up the galley with dirty dishes. We bought 2 el'cheapo plastic wash basins at Walmart one red for wash one white for rinse. We just got one of those Coleman Hot Water on Demand units and we can sit it on the fold up table next to the basins for an easy wash up. It makes water hot enough for beverages too. So build your galley cabinets to your needs and desires and forget what others do. :) Danny

Chris,
We haven't used ours enough to give you any good advice on how our decisions have gone. We have a cooler under the counter during the day, but our old dog sleeps there at night & reality is we can't leave her home. So for now that's how it will be.
The reality is only you can decide what works for you. So all you can do is look at all the pictures for ideas & think what you would like. If you find you change your mind after a while, I guess you can do a remodel.

If I find I have enough space I will keep the cooler under the counter, because when cooking I like the idea of having everything right there. Also when we travel I like the idea of the cooler being there so I can make sandwiches on the counter top. Before we had the trailer I was working out of the back of the truck using the cooler as the counter top at rest stops & the back of the trailer is 100% better than that. I also have a small cooler in the towing vehicle, for drinks etc as we go.
So good luck in figuring what works for you.
Martha ;)

Check out the galley gallery for some ideas. This is another "what ever works for you" thing.

You might make a list of the things you use at home and see if it can be put in.

Thank you all for the input. Thanks Anutie M for the link to the Galley Gallery, even MORE ideas to consider! One of these days I may actually make a decision and start building!

Bledsoe, I like what you did in your remodel. If you wouldn't mind bringing the tear to work, I'd love to stop by and take some notes and some pics. I live just a couple miles from Nike & Costco over off 185th.

If next week works for you, my schedule is wide open except for Friday when I'll be leaving town for the weekend.

Chris

I'm out in Hillsboro, so I think those of us on the west side need to get together for a tech session or something once we start working on our teardrop again. We'd love to host everyone for a meet & greet later this summer (full schedule until then, anyway).
