Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Well I've finally started my build. I have a red trailer 5x8. I've decided to build the wall so it hangs down and covers the side rail of the frame. Of course there are lots of bolt heads sticking out that will prevent the wall from laying flat against the rail without some modifications. I know I can just drill out part of the plywood wall but what have others done easily and successfully to fix this?

I cut a fillet that is I believe 3/8th thick and is the length of the trailer and the depth of the frame --- 3" by 8ft. then just cut the bolt holes out from that.

I was just going to post about this. Are you cutting the frame members in order to cover the sides? I bought my trailer from someone, and it is already assembled (assembled width is 60 1/4"). I hate to think about taking it apart, cutting 2" off, drilling new holes, and re-assembly. Would it be easier to put some kind of skirt around the bottom to cover the frame rails?

With a 60" wide trailer, you could use baltic birch to skin your teardrop. It's 5' wide. If you hang your walls over the side, you'll need to buy 4x8 sheets of thin plywood, and cut off 34".

The reason the generic benroy plans suggest cutting off 2" is so that you can use baltic birch sheets for skinning the roof.

Your situation may be different. adjust accordingly.

Thanks for the tip... I was trying to make things too difficult as usual. Now, if we can settle on a design, I'll go buy some wood. We're leaning towards a Grasshopper as opposed to a Weekender (not that much difference I guess).

The filet sounds like a great idea. I will be doing as Mike suggested, using 4x8 sheets width-wise and just cutting off what I dont need. To me the extra space inside is worth it.

I did it the hard way... and I can not believe I didnt take any pictures.
But, I put blue chalk on the bolt heads and spring bracket and pressed the wall against the trailer. Then I chiseled out where the bolts and bracket would touch.

If I would have had a router it would have been easier. But ya do what ya can with what ya got.
