Can any one tell me if Pine is o.k. to use as Galley hinge spar? I was going to use a hard wood ( like Oak) but will the pine be o.k. ? ( strength wise)

I think it is commonly thought that a hardwood is preferred. Many use poplar.

I used two 1x3s; 1 oak and 1 poplar laminated together for the hinge spar and the same thing for the "top" of the hinge, thuse all screw are going into good solid wood. All other spars are 1x3's pine/poplar laminated together. Everything was surfaced down to 1.5"x2.5"

I cut all my spars out of 2x12 southern yellow pine #1 .When I got to my galley headboard and the spar I simply replaced the 2x2 spars ( 1 1/2" x 1 1/2") with a 2x3 (1 1/2" x 3") laid flat to give more width to land the hinge on.
The Southern Yellow pine is about 50% stronger and readily available at any lumber yard as 2x8 2x10 and 2x12. the smaller framing material is generally spruce pine or fir. In the southern states even the smaller dimensions may be Southern Yellow pine.
