Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

ok, so now I have signed up, been to Minden, read so many post my eyes hurt, and finally have a couple of questions

I really like the mini trailer build and have read and re-read all of the posts trying to get my brain around it. Of course like everyone I really like some things about the build, but have some of my own ideas i am trying to work out on paper.

I want to buid a teardrop like camper that will sleep 3 (mom, dad, and son), have a bathroom of some type (some portable privacy), and a rear kitchen hatch.

Now to the first question. How big are the beds? I have been researching how big each bed needs to be in order to maximize space and keep everyone happy. I can go with 3 separate bed/bunks, or 1 for us and one for our son. Going with 3 beds seems ideal with 2 of them arranged as a bunk maybe width wise along the front of the camper and one along the side/rear? I am thinking 30" is about the minimum for adults and 24" for my son (he is 10)? Any thoughts here are appreciated.

Right now I working on a design (scratching on paper) for an 8 foot long and six something wide trailer that is turpin like, but with a rear hatch.

My rig is not a teardrop, so this may not be useful info for you, but it is a tiny travel trailer (cargo trailer conversion). I have a double or full size bed in mine (54 x 75). It folds up into a sofa. I made it a full size so that I could use standard "full" size linen.

Go to the hall of Fame and look at JMTK's teardrop.

If you go 5 feet wide you can fit a queen size bed in it for the adults and only need 1 bunkbed for your son

In the picture above, a foam mattress can be put in the pathway that is almost twin size. Your son won't fit a 5 wide bunk long. The other solution might be to put a removable bunk above the bed. It could drop to make a sofa back during the day. Depends a lot on how tall you are.

Another way would be to make the bed the length of the TD and a bunk across the front. Use a tent for a potty/dressing area.

One thing to keep in mind is the availability of bed sheets that'll fit. I think you'll find most camper sheets, designed for 4" thick mattresses are 58 or so" wide and 75" long. Before you lay out your interior, figure your bed size, and before you figure your bed size, make sure you can get sheets. We found the most available for a 4" thick camper size mattress was 58" wide X 75" long. This fit nice in a 5' wide cabin with 3/4" thick walls. Just a heads up so you don't waste any precious space.
