Building Inside Cabinets - Assistance

Postby Classic Finn » Thu Jun 21, 2007 3:16 am

Ok Im sort of stuck...  Ive never built cabinets so can someone give me a little boost as to how to even start? These would be the cabinets towards the galley..but inside ..

Im going to try to achieve the interior back cabinets.. but my mind is totally blank as to how to even start...Embarrassing Moments...
:duh :scratchthinking: The wall behind the galley is all one section from the hinge cross piece to the floor..

Hi Heikki, My suggestion to you, young man, would be to have a quick look through the Generic Benroy plans to get a basic idea. From that you should be able to expand your ideas for your TD.
I found the first lot a bit daunting until I checked those plans.
Cheers
Paul

The Benroy plans are a good start. Just remember---it's a box. You can frame a box and hang it with some screws. Happy Mid-summer.

big H,
well i am building my second and going on scratch. each time i start something i draw it out on graf paper a general idea. think about it three times, measure twice and cut once. build a frame from the sketch. once you have the frame you can make more subtle adjustments to fit what you want. i use a fairly cheep material to build the frame so if i scrap something it is no major loss. once the suitable frame is built and in place, then you can start to cover it and add doors. OR rebuild the frame with a more expensive material that you want.

here i built a frame from pine and covered it with 1/4 oak ply. i took this apart about three times, changed things and moved braces to suit my doors.

however on my galley. the inner frame will be pine with the exterior frame(pieces showing) will be oak. us your imigination and come up with your own unique disign.

If your sidewalls and roof are already up like mine were, build them a 1/2" small in the width...MUCH easier to get in there...then trim out nicely (which I have yet to do, but had it functional for ITG)...just a thought.

Heikki,

Remember that the pocket screw jig is your friend. I am assuming that you cabinets will be at the topof your trailer. This gives you 4 out of 6 sides already built, so all you need to attach to your walls are the bottom and front, you can install dividers if you like.

Did you do sandwich construction walls? If so you need to position the cabinet face to take advantage of one of the vertical studs in your walls.

If not just make sure your screws do not go through your walls
