Would this door be too small for a Teardrop?

Postby sandman » Mon Jul 02, 2007 4:24 pm

Guys,

I had planned on using Drop Down Feed Door from a Horse Trailer for my Teardrop/Cycle Hauler. There is a feed door on Ebay right now but it say's it's 20x30. Would this be too small for a Teardrop??

Here is a link to the door. It's the exact style I want but just not sure on the size. What's are you guy's thoughts?

...some thoughts...while it could be used as a door, it is a tad small(but usable)...I had looked at similar doors, early on but rejected them for 2 reasons...size and most importantly, they cannot be latched/unlatched from the inside...besides, since they are "feed" doors, someone may come along and wanna dump some oats/alflafa/molasses thru them :D ;)

I dont know how big you are but the distance across my shoulders is a tad more than 22 inches and the distance from a flat surface while sitting to top of my head is about 35 inches.... It would pretty tough for someone like me to sit in door way, that makes it to small for me! I probably need a 24 x38 inch "finished" door opening....

This subject also made me think about getting in and out.... Does anybody have any "grab bars" inside near doors to assist the process of ingress or egress...

It does seem pretty small. I am a BIG FAT DUDE so I imagine it would not work. I like the look of it as far as style goes. I wonder if you can change the latch mechanism. I have a set of Teardrop Plans from a guy that uses Feed Doors for all his builds. I haven't asked him about the latch though. He states he uses Feed Doors in the 26x32 Size for all his Teardrops. As much trouble as I have had with my build, it would nice to buy the doors premade where I can just slap them on.

MadJack, would you rule out using Feed Doors all together? Are there any other drawbacks you can think of? Anybody else here ever used one??

SM, if yu can make 'em work...cool...after looking and rejecting them, we built our doors and built them as large as possible which I thinks worked out to 32x38 and am very happy with them...a couple of folks who used all glass doors, found they had problems with condensate forming on them during the nite...just another thing to consider....but I do agree they would look cool and would simplify things...however, I wouldn't want doors only 20" wide...
