OSB (NEW) NEED ANSWER FAST!!

Postby benzu » Fri Jul 20, 2007 2:12 pm

This is a question off of StumpJumpers question.

After reading all about OSB, i'm stopping production on my floor. I've cut one piece and now I'm wondering what I should use instead of OSB for the flooring?

Mike, I wouldn't use OSB for anything that comes within a half mile of water...use ply in whatever thickness you need...a BCX grade will give you a sanded side with exterior glue......

I used 1/2" AC plywood undercoated with truck bed liner. Don't know if thats standard, or normal, but it seems to be working well....for all of the 3 weeks or so I've had it on. I'm pretty confident though, since I've been using it as a utility trailer while I wait to do the profile and it has weathered a lot of wet already with the top only protected by latex paint.

Madjack, Thanks for that, just in the nick of time. I getting out of work at 3pm and going home to finish the floor. Now I can stop by HD on the way home and by some ply.

Thanks,

Mike

That sure is some fancy ($) stuff just to cover it up with bedliner. At least you know it's pretty under there. :D

Another consideration if you plan on spending any length of time in your trailer is the flormaldahyde smell given off by OSB - Anyone been following the recent testimony on the hill about FEMA trailers making people sick?

how are AC and BC for voids? I'd hate to spend the $$$$$ on marine ply to avoid them. Seems like cdx has a lot of voids.

AC, should have no voids on the surface...BC will have any voids filled with a waterproof filler...both should have any internal voids filled with a waterproof filler...personally, I feel that marine ply is overkill for a tear......

is there a formaldehyde-free plywood? I thought all plywoods use formaldehyde glues.

I expect you're probably right - But in plywood, the glue is only between the layers, so it's 'flitered' through a layer of wood - With OSB, the glue is right there staring at you and leaching out the gases for the next 30 years

At any rate, they are blaming much of the sickness on the OSB - They'll be toting away our FEMA camper next week and living in it for 18 months didn't seem to kill us, but I was just posting a 'heads up' for anyone thinking of living in an all OSB 'box' - Our FEMA camper had very little visible OSB, but that varies by manufacturer

Yes there are Formaldahyde free plywoods. And, I believe you can order them through Home Depot.
