Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I was conversing with Steve, maker of the Puffin about a frame idea I have for a TTT. I wanted the drop floor to go all the way across the floor to make it super easy to step in from the outside of the trailer. I came up with the following design but need inputs as to the strength. I think it should be ok since I will be putting gussets on all the joints for extra support. Of course I will be bolting down the frame to the floor. Let me know what all of you think. k?

Ask Len19070 how he did his. At one time he had a pic of his frame in his album but it is not there now. He had it where you didn't have to step over the frame.

Just eyeballing it and knowing what I know about stresses on trailers (which isn't much knowledge at all) I would think that the weakest point are the two frame rails on the outside of the dropped box. You may could double up that area for strength?

You should build that trailer and I'll place the Puffin on it. Then I'll road test it for a few years and let you know how it does.

I hear you, that is good input. Do you think it would be better to put a second 2x2 or one 2x4 steel tube?

I couldn't ask you to do all that for me. I'll do all the road testing after you get the puffin on it.

I'm somewhere up in the North West U.S. area where it rains all the time.

As for the 2x2 or 2x4, I'd just weld another 2x2 to it and extend 6" or so beyond the crossmembers on both sides because I think it would be easier, and the frame rail would be solid, unless you use 2x4 for the frame rails which is starting to get heavy.

How soon you thinking about starting on this?

I'll see if I can find some Shasta frame pictures. They use a dropped frame area by the door to make it easier to enter/exit.
