Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Here is a cut away of my door trim and gasket. I do not have the gasket material here yet but it is on order from Grant at Lil Bear.



I would like to hang my doors soon, but I need the dimension on the thickness of the gasket material with the door closed. Anyone out there using Grants Door seal gasket material?

I still have to cut the rabbit joint (for lack of a better word or description) on the trim and that depends on the thickness of the gasket when compressed.... or should I just wait till it comes in??

In short, what would the dimension be for the ? in the above sketch?

MK, I don't know the thickness of Grants weatherstripping BUT you will want to achieve a 50% compression of the seal...

Freebird, Thanks! I had just gotten through figuring out the gap should be 3/16 when I refreshed and found your post.

I am so glad you posted with the info and the thumbs up for the seals Grants offers. I could not find any of that style localy.

From Grant's website:

Mary another approach to giving yourself the relief for the gasket material is to shim out the door with a strip of aluminum on the hinge. Ideally, the offset hinges work really well and I've used them in the past for that offset, I get the 1/8" offsets. With your door framing, offsetting the door isn't really going to show up as the door frame breaks the plane of the flat surface anyway and one might be hard pressed to see that the door is offset. Just what I've experienced. Doug

I would mount the doors first and then measure to see what amount of room you need to fit the weather strip. If your doors don't fit as you envisioned then you still have the chance to adjust how the trim fits the weather strip.

I am using the bullet hinges, kinda like Victor Star's doors. The trim will go all around the door and the hinges will be mounted to the top of it and a offset.

I can't be much help at all...The doors on mine are similar and I didn't leave enough gap for the weatherstrip and had to re-do my hinges, Ugh.

Here are some updated Photos of the first door installed.





I still need to route out where the gasket is installed... Thinking I can get away with just routing out the trim edge that the hinge is installed on. Thats where it will be pinched the most.

I will post pics when the gasket is installed.
