I just got back to my Tear this sunday afternoon and I have a question. How do you keep your hurricane hinge from silding side to side when you open and close your hatch?

funny I never thought of it but it's never been off either always in the right place.

I haven't done it, but you could rout a slot in the inner piece...very small, the thickness of a screw, and then put a short screw thru the outer piece into the slot in the inner piece. That would lock the hinge from sliding side to side.

Noticed on the Little Guy trailerrs they just use a screw in the hinge ends for a stop. I just use piano hinge myself.

If you mount gas shocks to help lift the galley lid, that seems to keep it all in the right place. At least, I *think* that's why mine is not sliding sideways!

:( Hi folks. My trailer is 6x8, an old pop up recycled, for the life of me I can not find a six foot long hurrican hinge. Trailer Parts in Victor, Mt. says by two five foot sections, cut them down and put them together. I say you have not seen my mechanical ability yet(not going to happen). any help, advise, complants, jokes, prayers would be helpfull. Thanks dbc. I am trying to upload pictures of progress so far but, remember that mechanical ability I was talking about.

Oh yeah, if you look at that web page, it says any size up to 8 feet. There you go!

BE SURE TO INSTALL THE HINGE FACING THE RIGHT WAY. There is a front & a back! The front side is the solid side. (I learned that the hard way!)

Also remember to ask for your hinge material to be a tiny bit longer than the width of your trailer. Then keep the front piece longer than the back (underside) piece. So when it does rain, the front piece sticks out and the water drops off, instead of running into the lower piece of the hinge tube. Mike S has a nice rainy day photo of that posted here somewhere. Search for "hurricane hinge" and you'll find it, and my tale of woe as I found out that mine was on backwards.

Oh & BTW, I saw that some people will shorten the back (lower) hinge piece even 1.5" more & then screw a screw into the top (front) hinge piece just a 1/2" from each edge. This will keep the top hinge (attached to the galley lid) from sliding left or right. I have a photo I can post if you need to see that.
