Experienced An Exploding Worm Hole Today...

Have been slowly fitting, gluing and screwing my ceiling into position...
Image
I'm doing a couple of sections (Spars and blocking) per day... This is day three...

Image
Using temporary blocking inside the cabin to hold the 1/8" maple plywood in position while the glue sets up...

Well... I was getting ready to add another spar and corresponding ledger blocking when all the sudden I heard a loud CRACK!!! :o
Upon further review I discovered why and what happened...
This 1/8" maple was the finset stuff I could find and it wasn't cheap, about $40 per sheet. The maple side is very nice... Nice grain and bookmatched to boot, but...
The backside is piss poor garbage wood as far as I'm concerned.... crappy grain, voids and little black worm holes in various spots...
Image
This worm hole is where the problem occured... it cracked the backside of the plywood at each end of the hole.
(Something to check for on future ceiling plywood purchases)
Fortunately, the maple side didn't crack, but there is a small facet there right now... And it happened in the area that I'll be installing a front upper shelf.
When the glue on the closest spar is cured I'm going to install some additional blocking to hopefully get rid of that small facet on the interior side and get back that nice radius, if not, I'll install the shelf right over the top of it...
A damned worm hole... Who would've thunk it?

Perhaps you could go through the wormhole and end up in the delta quadrant – reverse time through a trans warp time conduit, use an inverse tecichrone particle infusion transducer and voila! - problem solved. It’s the little things that get you. I’m sure we will all be looking for those pesky wormholes now

Deano...that was probably caused by an ice worm...got lots of them up here....just get a couple of rolls of duct tape, put some on the back side, and if that doesn't work, put some on the inside, and decorate it with a felt pen, you know, stars, moons and such, or cover the interior with shag carpeting...Women will love it, really romantic. Red

Well... Fortunately it happened in the right spot.
I had that kid at the lumber yard, drag down about ten sheets, before coosing this one. He seemed a little miffed until I told him what I was gonna do with it and I'll tell yaa... Bending it with the grain going lengthwise make's it feel like it's just gonna explode at any moment.
It bends like a dream with the grain going the other way...

Gee Thanks Red...
While I'm at it, I'll install shag carpet on the ceiling... Call it the Shagin' Wagon.
Chicks will dig it, Uh-Huh. :R

The worm hole has been dealt with and I'm happy to say, I got the radius back on the interior side and no sign of any deviation, plus the block will work good for attaching the shelf.

Dean, glad to hear that the bucket of dry wall mud worked out for you, if it starts to fall down, just use the duct tape method we talked about, glad to be of help. Red

Did you purchase the wood locally? Care to divulge your source for a newby?
Wondering if you get your 'stuff' mostly at one local or do you do much shopping?

Russ,
I buy most if not all my lumber locally.... Almquist Lumber
The last stuff I traveled to go get was some western red cedar for the canoe project... Found a good source in Bend, Oregon.

gotta look out for flying wood! glad you got your problem fixed and that it wont take much to cover it with a cabinet. When Mike'splywood exploded last week, he couldnt find enough pieces to even THINK about using it for something.....much less being able to cover up his rip with a cabinet.... what luck..... Glad to know that it happens to "oldbies" as well as "newbies"...
