Building over the frame edges...

I have a question for those who have designed and/or built a TTT. I have seen at least one TTT that was built on the Harbor Freight trailer, but the floor was extended to either side such that the wheels were underneath the trailer vs. on the outside.
Do you need the chassis to have supports that extend to the outer edge of the wheels to accomplish this, or can you accomplish it with the floor structure, using the standard 'box' of the Harbor Freight (other other manuf.) trailer?
Hopefully my question makes sense.

Mine extends beyond the sides of the trailer. Not so much at the sides, but more at the front and rear. Just the floor structure holds it up.
Mine has not been on the road yet though..

Seriously the hf axle assembly is 48" wide and the handail was 24" top of top rail to bottom of center rail so with top of rail to top of rail they measured out at 48" like it was ment to be. All I used was the axle assembly and the tongue by prying it open enough to slip it over the handrail and weld it in.
Took Chubby 700 miles this week and was a bit nervous as it was literally our first time on the road. All went well and I had folks at rest stops and gas stations wanting to look it over. I probably looked like a proud papa.

Well, you actually did add on the supports out to the sides, so that's not really what I'm proposing/asking.
Anyone else?

I would say it would depend on how wide you're going. The Puffin (my Tiny Travel Trailer) is 6' wide on a 4' trailer w/o extensions. I have 3700+ miles, and 50+ days camping in it.
coonrebel - That's slick! Did you make those, or buy them. I like that.

I made them out of 3/4" and 1" angle iron.

If you look at how a mass produced travel trailer is made (and how little bracing is used), and how most people brace (a little overkill is not bad) the over hang. The truth is somewhere in the middle. The joint at the floor, to the wall, becomes very critical.
