5x8 Floor?

(Edited this, originally posted as 5x10, but I meant 5x8. Thanks, AL.)

Hi Gang,

I thought I posted this last night, but now I can't find it. If I am building a 5x8 floor, I am thinking to use two 4x8's side by side, cutting three feet off. Can I do this without scarfing, just covering the seam with a 1x2?

Also, should I try to get my floor support (the other 1x2's) to align with the metal crossbars of the trailer, or does it matter?

Thanks, Al Lyons in Asheville

Al,

When I built my floor I did it just like you are planning, except I used 2X4 lumber under the floor to reinforce the joint. Overkill, I know now.

Al, that would work OK...on our present build(5x9), I used 2 sheets of 5x5x1/2 and cutoff a foot on one of the sheets...they were joined using a 1/4" spline and epoxy...since we built our own frame, we put a crossmember under the joint and screwed the ply directly to the frame...

Thanks!

OK, Thanks Steve and (Mad) Jack!

And I am assuming then that it is better to run the other 1x2's directly over the steel crossbeams of the trailer.

Thanks, AL in Asheville

Hey there, Al!

I was going to ask if you've checked with your local independant lumber yard or hardwood supply about the availability of 5'x10' plywood (I can get it out here, no problem, except that a sheet of 3/4" costs me about $100!), but then I see where you're doing a sub-floor and all that. I'm with Jack, though ... get some 5'x5' cabinet plywood and just have one seam, over a 2x2, and yes, put a crossmember of the frame under the joint.

Good Luck, have a Happy Thanksgiving, and as always ...

CHEERS!
