Question on Cabinets

Postby Classic Finn » Thu Jan 10, 2008 3:56 pm

I need to ask for some opinions or ideas..

And this pertains to not building the correct way from the very beginning but maybe it can be remedied.

I built my cabinets outside of the tear.. and since the inner walls are mahogany and outer already has the aluminum I cant really drill holes from the outside.

So my question is. What is the best way to mount the cabinets now inside?
The tear walls are 3/4 inch. Would the Kreg Tool be handy in this or what suggestions do you have?

I used pocket screws (Kreg jig) on my cabinets for the same reason as you--I put the aluminum on my walls already and did not want to drill holes. They will hold fine in 3/4 plywood (as long as you don't hit a void in the plywood.)

Are they several seperate cabinets or one unit ?

Are they completely boxed ? ( The ends are not open )

Throw us a pic and we'll come up with something!

Its one unit. walls on the sides, with doors on either side and middle is open for small Tv or Labtop.

Be brave Be very brave! Use 3/4" screws thru the side skins of your cabinet inside the cube in 3 or 4 inconspicuious spots into your trailer sides but be sure to angle them downward on each side skin. By angeling them downward you do two things you reduce the horizontal penetration and still get a full bite in the side skin it also uses the weight of the loaded cabinet to dig in rather than try and pull out the screw. I would not use a drill driver as you run the risk of puncturing your aluminum outer skin.Run them partway and hand screw them to their final penetration.

Classic Finn,

The plans I built my TD with years ago said to put the screws from the outside in. I thought that would make a difficult job if I ever had to pull the cabinets for any reason. (damage the aluminum skin) I also built my cabinets on the bench and then installed them into the trailer. I put the screws from the inside of the cabinets out like what was previously mentioned. I installed a few of test screws on scrap material to get the "feel" of how much torque was needed without going through the outer piece. It has worked fine for 8 years and miles of bumpy roads. Like Bobhenry says, use screws short enough to not penetrate the outside skin but be able to securely hold the cabinets.

Hope this helps,

Why not use a rail that is secured to the wall through glue/screws, then with pins in double shear (2 planes) secure the cabinets. A sheet of thin rubber sheet could be used to keep the wall and cabinets from vibrating and rubbing against each other. If work was necessary on the cabinets, remove the pins and slide them out. Or if the TD was to be used for something and they were in the way, remove them.
