I am building a 5x8 Benroy and was wondering if the sleeping area needs to be the full 80" for a queen mattress? I am planning on using a memory foam mattress from Wal Mart. I would like to keep the galley as deep as possible.

Depends on how tall you are. Mine is 75", I am 72" tall, and it works for me.

EDIT: By the way....that's a very nice crappie!

I am 69" tall. Did not know if you can shorten the mattress or if you can buy it shorter than 80".

I may not understand the question, but since a queen mattress is 80 inches long, I supposed that yes, you will need the whole 80 inches.

If you want to maximize galley floor space, you might want to consider a full-size mattress, or a custom cut-to-size mattress in whatever size strikes your fancy. One thing we discovered is that since you can sleep right up against the walls, the interior feels much larger than a regular mattress. We normally sleep on a king-szie at home, but the full-size inside the TD gives us plenty of room.

I bought a memory foam mattress from Walmart and I will cut mine down to fit. It cuts easily.

Memory foam cuts extremely well with an electric carving knife. We trimmed ours down a wee bit too.

We built a 5x8 Benroy also, and used a 74" mattress as was in our Yoder Toter. I am 72" and it works great. It leaves you plenty of room in the galley for a full size cooler.

...yep just use an electric carving knife to trim to fit OR contact the "foamguys"(an ebay store) or Know Foam and have them cut one to fit....we use the foamguys and a 4"x56"x78" heavy foam mattress is around 150 bucks......

Whats the price on the Wally' foam matt.? I have never seen them at ours, are they special order? I plan on Knox Foam as MJ said seemed a good price. Interior on mine is 55 x 76 and I planned on 54 x 75 to fit right in and have a small extra to tuck in with.

Creekslick, we used the 4" memory foam mattress from Wal Mart plus we already had the 1 1/2" memory foam topper that Wal Mart sells so we put that on top for a total of 5 1/2". It works great. My TD isn't a Benroy but it's 57 1/2" x 74" inside the sleeping cabin. I used my electric carving (filet) knife to cut it about a half inch smaller so I'd have room to tuck the sheets around it. We bought the queen size since a 'full' size wouldn't have been wide enough.

We paid $129. for our 4" Memory foam at Walmart. It was located in the bedding section of the store, across from the bed pillows. It's compressed and in a box. It takes a full day for the 4" topper to fully expand. Our 8" expanded within minutes. One of the reasons for this is (I think) is that it is only 1.5" memory foam the other 2.5 is a high density foam. The other reason it was hot when we opened the 8" and cold when we opened the 4".

4" is quite comfortable and I like a comfy mattress.

Currently the 4" is on sale at the Walmart site but they are out of stock online.
